I have read some wonderful ideas in the last 24 hours and I would be happy with most of them. Not all, but most.
I want to put an idea out there for people to consider as these names come forward. We are a G-5 school. While we have better facilities than our direct competitors in the G-5, we suffer in comparison to our P-5 competitors. These facilities make a major difference in recruiting. We don't have $20 million coming in annually in TV money to make all of these things happen tomorrow. We need to be smarter and plan better as an organization. In the mean time, how do we off set these challenges and move forward?
Besides the snake oil salesmen on the recruiting trail, I think our next HC and staff need to be innovators. This coach needs to create an offense/defense that our competitors haven't seen and don't really know how to counter - that includes the P-5 schools. They also need to continually innovate that offense or defense. This will create a competitive product and build momentum going forward. This will also make us stand apart from the competition when it comes to recruiting. In 2015 we cannot compete athlete to athlete or building to building. Our next coach needs to change the game, until our O Line physically matches our opponents D Line...etc.
Don't get me wrong, this is not the safest strategy. However, with the challenges we face as an institution this could also be the fastest route to the top
Thoughts...

You can make up those $20M in TV money through other ways (sell naming rights for Moody and Ford, increase giving, increase attendance to games, beer sales, merchandise sales, ad space etc.) $20M is really nice to have, but shouldn't put us out of the game, at least until rules for P5 stipends change

The next coach needs to be someone who is passionate about being at SMU. June never exhibited any outward emotion about loving this place. Those of us who spent our college years on The Hilltop know how special a place it is. We want to hear our coach say publicly that SMU is a wonderful place to be and is truly unique in what it has to offer. Sell the program to the fans. Sell the program to recruits. Sell the program to high school coaches. Sell the program to DFW sports fans who just want to be entertained by college football. SELL THIS PROGRAM TO ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Needs to be seen everywhere in and around Dallas when he's not recruiting. Shake hands. Kiss babies. Most importantly: win games. That's how you create a fanbase.

You just described LB. He has been passionate about SMU since the moment he was hired.

Thinking about some of these coaches coming to SMU and thinking that November is right around the corner has me really excited. Thank you Larry and Hoops team!

Greenbelt,
Absolutely. This was something June either wasn't very good at or flat out didn't do. Win some key match ups. When we play Tech or Baylor or Michigan or whoever P5 program don't go get your freaking doors blown off in the first 10 minutes of the game. Be competitive! Play a style of football that is fun and entertaining. Watching this team the last several years was honestly not an entertaining product. Make this thing fun and be passionate about SMU.
Back off Warchild seriously.

No... I'm generally a giant pain in the [Gary Patterson]. My bigger point is that we have some athletic disadvantages at the moment. If we do the same thing as everyone else it won't help us succeed.
