After all that has happened, which of the two coaches do you prefer?
Even at his worst, I still hold June Jones to be better than Phil Bennett at his best.

If and it is a BIG if... Phil would have called 5 QB sneaks. As his wife ripped him for not doing. We would have won 4 more games and he still may be here.

Bennett was not good, but at least you knew he was trying. June got better results but has brought me more aggravation.

Bennett would roll late-2013-2014 June...overall though, June was better.

In the strangest of ironies, give me Bennett for offense (burns) and June for defense (mason). Give me June for game management and player development, give me Bennett for recruiting

Today, I'd take Bennett. Rating their success, though, no contest...

No doubt Bennett was not up to being a HC, but he did love SMU. I'm not convinced JJ was up to being a HC either or at least he wasn't very good at it (recruiting) and I don't think he had much love for SMU. Given today's better recruiting situation, Bennett might have been able to do better. JJ accomplished some good things, but was not able to sustain it. So, it's a toss up in my book.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

+1. If I was the new coach, I might keep Mason. He did a good job.

I wonder what Bennett would have done if he had the same restrictions removed as Coach Jones.

Couldn't agree more.

I think most would agree JJ was the better HC.
A more telling question is who left the team with better players and for me that's a tough one to answer.
But when you factor in that JJ made 4X+ more than PB, didn't have to deal with the recruiting restrictions PB had to and was able to offer his players more athlete-friendly courses, it's not even close.
PB left us in a far better place than JJ.

How is that tough to answer? Bennett left the team with (among others): QB - Justin Willis RB - Demyron Martin WR - Emmanuel Sanders, Aldrick Robinson, Terrance Wilkerson TE - Vincent Chase OL - Kelvin Beachum, Josh LeRibeus, Sean Lobo, Tommy Poynter DL - Patrick Handy, Serge Elizee LB - Youri Yenga, Justin Smart, Pete Fleps, Chase Kennemer, Will Bonilla DB - Bryan McCann, Rock Dennis K - Thomas Morstead, Kellis Cunningham How many current players could have started in 2008?

Add Cole Beasley to that list, he was a Bennett recruit.
Bennett left half of a future NFL offense.
