Does anyone know how much we pay the assistants?

Do we really know if we pay more than UNT?

It looks like we don't release the information publicly, but I would love to know if we are in the range of $1M for the staff like UNT or we are close to $2M like the rest of our conference. And in the near future are we interested in being in the $2 - $4M range like the P5.

I would honestly be shocked if we were much over $1M right now. Mason was not a coordinator before he came in, so I bet he didn't cost much. The new guys can't cost very much at all. Nobody else has huge pedigree. Even if Mason is at 400K, I bet SB, Leon, and Daniels are at 60K and the rest around 100, which would put us at 1.1M total, not far off from UNT, and significantly below the other staffs in our conference.

I could be totally underestimating all of that. Maybe June is paying his guys on offense 300K per year and we have a $2M staff. But I doubt it.

I'd really like to hear if anyone out there knows. It seems to me like our CoC for this effort needs to put forward about $2M for the head coach and another $2M for the assistants.

Or maybe June just hired guys whose experience didn't warrant a higher salary. If June didn't have enough money to hire who he wanted - we GD would have heard about it from Steinberg during the extension negotiation. If we heard about the IPF and other so called issues, do you think they would left out that SMU was too cheap to pay for decent assistants.

It's over. Let it go. June's gone - no more need to rationalize his failings.

Even I think that this is a phantom argument. The UNT budget is $1,055,900 and their DC only makes about $170,00 per this chart. Here is the kicker, UTSA is playing better football than either SMU or UNT and according to this chart their entire staff budget is only $688,943. So staff budget probably is not the issue.

Alright, I'm just saying that if we are going to play with the big boys, we have to budget for the assistant coaches. People are throwing around in other threads paying 800K for a coordinator and we don't come anywhere close to that right now. UTSA has a low budget and they are playing a league with teams that have a low budget.

If we want to play with the teams in our conference, we need to be at 1.6 - 2M. And if we want to be considered P5, we need to be over 2M. Look at Louisville. Look at the relative numbers with the rest of our conference mates. And it DOES matter - you get what you pay for.

I realize there is a chicken and the egg thing here - was June's budget limited, which forced him to hire friends for cheap, or did he want to hire his buddies so his budget got limited.

Either way, it is something to watch for and demand - if we want to compete, we need to spend around 2M for a head coach and 2M on assistants. It might not have the same level of impact as the Model Stallion talked about years ago, but it is incredibly important if we want this program to get to where we all think it should be.

Since we don't know what the budget was it is unfair to constantly indirectly or directly infer that the school had a low or limited budget. From my understanding as SMT said the coaches salary nor the staff salary will be an issue per his CoC friend. Let's please move on from this.
