Excited again about SMU Football?

Postby Digetydog » Thu Sep 11, 2014 6:24 am

I am.

When we started up again, we knew that there would be beatings but we we very optimistic about the future. Unfortunately, the Kenneth Pye effect killed everything it touched.

When we hired JJ and Doh, there was a glimmer of hope again. We would not go gently into that good night. Doherty failed but led to Larry Brown.

Although JJ failed in his mission to create a BCS buster, he showed that the program was not hopeless. With inept recruiting, he took the Mustangs to bowl games. Imagine was good recruiting effort might do?

Today, fans are arguing over hiring Mack/Nutt or elite Coordinators as the next head coach. 8 years ago, we would have been begging someone from FCS to take our job.

I have zero expectations on wins but I think it will be a fun team to watch.

Definitely excited. Thought about posting this yesterday.

June did good things but hit a wall....a change will be a shot in the arm, even for the current team.

Really hope the incumbent staff reaches the players on an emotional, fiery level and mixes up the playbook -simplify and match to the player personnel. Like to see Davis and Cassell in the QB mix..

Not expecting wins, but anticipating a group playing with some anger

Interest from top coordinators is a good sign, and we've all witnessed the basketball transformation and how Dallas reacted..

Then hit that recruiting trail, which starts in your backyard....

This is an idyllic view - I don't have a clue what the powers that be really want/ will allow, etc....

Like most I was not anticipating this season to be very fun to watch but will always support SMU no matter what.

I'm no expert but it seemed obvious to me that June Jones was only looking ahead to his next golf outing or trip to Hawaii--this may not be entirely fair but it was the perception of many.

Ever since his "resignation" I've been thinking of all of the possibilities, including having a goal of repeatedly winning the AAC, going to meaningful bowl games, and having some success against former SWC rivals; for all of the reasons that get mentioned on this Board (city of Dallas, proximity to local high school football, resources of the University, good facilities, etc,) there is just no reason this can't happen here.

Yes I am excited again abotu SMU Football !

I'm excited about the future of SMU Football, but I still think getting through this season is going to be rough. Losing a HC (whatever you think of him) creates a lot of buzz around who the next guy will be, which I can only imagine serves as a distraction to the staff left over (who no doubt will work their asses off) who likely are searching for work at season's end. How that falls over to the players is always a crap shoot. That said, Coach Jones created a situation where some really quality candidates could be interested in coming here so things definitely look bright moving forward. As for now, I need to run and replenish my scotch selection for the rest of this season.

Yes!

I was considering sitting out until JJ was gone solely because I was concerned about keeping my yap shut.

The players deserve better than some numbnuts (or a whole bunch of them) heckling their HC during the entire game (whether he deserved it or not).

Win or lose we'll make it through the season-- just so long as we see some effort/heart/grit/nuts/<whatever kind of coach speak you want to insert> out of these kids and their coaches I'll be satisfied.

I was really upset after the UNT lost. After June resigned, I felt hope again. Sure we are going to take a beating the next few weeks, but I wouldn't miss it for the world. If we are true fans we will support this time like they are National Championship contenders.

^agree. There was a lot of apathy to go around. I hardly put this 100% on June, although he was the captain of the ship

Let's just fast forward through the rest of the season, get a new staff in here, and see where we go from there.

Agreed. Apathy is fixable when we start winning, though.
