Dickerson's comments now a subject on Around the Horn

Postby stc9 » Thu Sep 11, 2014 5:18 pm

They are killing him.

To paraphrase: "He (ED) was part of the original problem at SMU. They haven't gotten the right people in there to fix the problems and now he is back to create more problems"

Local Little Rock sports show is ripping him and SMU. They act like no other school has ever cheated and every SMU player got a BMW and tons of cash.

I have always believed that at least 60 percent of the schools who voted in favor of the Death Penalty should have recused themselves; after all, they were doing the same thing. Also, there
had to be an appropriate penalty short of ruining our football program, such as no scholarships for one year.

Subsequent events have proven that SMU was expendable, Penn State is not. Penn State has already been forgiven for covering up the actions of a pedophile. And I don't buy into the NCAA explanation that it's not fair to punish today's players; the exact same argument could have made for the SMU players in 1986.

Thank You ED. It's the story that keeps on giving.

Yep, those of you that defended the guy were a little short sighted on this. Everybody takes whatever little titillating sound bite and twists it to fit their agenda. Dikk-erson should have known better.

and as far as being part of the problem back then, whatever! Everybody was doing it, and we won the bidding. We did not even get nailed for anything ED related, did we? the big violations came via our dumba$$ governor after Dickerson was gone.

Again, thank you Dickerson, you made yourself and SMU look bad.

It has now been almost 30 years since the death penalty. The subject itself should be dead and buried. Remember: We did go to 4 mid-level bowl games in 6 years. The wheels have come off only in the last two years. ED should have been a statesman; he chose not to be one. He reaps what he sows.

Now it is time to get behind Mason and the team. It is once again an exciting time for SMU football. We need to build on what has been achieved in the last 6 years and simply ignore those who choose to be negative. We are not the only team to have a string of bad years. Just look at Vanderbilt now!

Many people do not understand that size of institution plays a huge role. The Penn State situation illustrates this to a tee. When you can put 100,000 fans in the seats at home and even for some road games then you have favor with the good ole NCAA. Small schools are very expendable and play with fire if they think they are going to get a fair break vs the big guys in regards to enforcement.

SMU will never get a fair deal when it comes to the NCAA. Just look at the basketball selection tournament last year. The big names run the show; we will always have a target on our backs. Fine. We simply have to be squeaky clean with regard to recruiting in all sports. If this puts us at a disadvantage, so be it. Unless and until the NCAA changes its ways, this is the hand we are dealt.

The world as the NCAA sees it:

Small school paying players = Death Penalty. An "example" that cheating won't be allowed
Large school paying players = Sanctions, no death penalty, business as usual
Large school harboring child sex offender = Sanctions, no death penalty, business as usual

Sick

Finish strong; if you lose, lose early...we didn't follow this formula and gave them the excuse they needed
