Latest coaching rumorsModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Latest coaching rumorsA sports radio show in Memphis has said that agents of both former Tennessee coach Philip Fulmer and Auburn coach Gene Chizik have inquired about the job. Now, frankly, I'm not all thrilled at the idea of either of these coaches taking the reigns (although I think Fulmer was a genuinely underated coach) but it shows that we may actually have a number of options when it comes time to choose a coach.
Re: Latest coaching rumorsWhen we do select, some will love and some will hate. But I think we have all agreed that this will be the true test for Rick Hart. Regardless of RGT or the CofC, Hart will be defined. I personally have complete faith he will do a good job.

Re: Latest coaching rumors
Yesterday, during my drive home, the host of ESPN Radio's national show asked Mack Brown if he was interested in the SMU job. While Mack deflected any specific job, that man is not done coaching. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Latest coaching rumors4 page thread on orangebloods about Mack saying he is interested in SMU, sure it is just a rumor at this time but.....
Personally, I'd rather have someone with more "fire in his belly" and something to prove than Mack, but it is still an interesting thought.
Re: Latest coaching rumorsBoth Fullmer and Mack have won championships - I like that.
Both would be a splash hire a la Larry and could show our commitment to football... "Moral Victories Make Me Sick" - TR

Re: Latest coaching rumorsThe way Mack recruits, I am ok with him being a little off his game. If he can bring in top level athletes, we would win the league even without an OC and DC.
Re: Latest coaching rumorsI don't care if we get a proven winner, or has proven to recruit Texas well, or even succeeded at the highest level.
All I want is someone that can get fired up and act like a cheerleader on meth and wears the school colors. That's all that really matters.
Re: Latest coaching rumorsI was not concerned with Larry Brown's age or track record (of leaving) at all because he is a gym rat teacher and this is his life. Not sure I can say the same about Mack. And most Longhorn fans would tell you he didn't recruit that great over the last 4 years and they are losing because of it. Granted their "bad" recruits and are bad recruits are on a whole nother level.
Would you rather have Mack or Morris? Think I'd take Morris. But either route will be fun to watch if we are lucky enough to get a high caliber coach when it is said and done.
Re: Latest coaching rumorsAs with any HC, the important variable will be his staff. If Mack comes in and hires a bunch of golfing buddies, we'll be right back where we started. If he follows LB lead, we'd be fine. That said, I'd much rather have a young, energetic, qualified HC with a similar staff.

Re: Latest coaching rumorsMac Brown Has the ability to do amazing things at SMU if he chooses too. Why? It is not about the money at this stage of his life. It would be about proving he can still do it and the love of the job. Why did Snyder go back to KSU again? Why did Hayden Fry want the Baylor job at his age that went to Briles? Why did Bowden go kicking and screaming and Joe Pa leave only after a scandal? It is their life and nothing can replace the excitement of Saturday game day when the nervous pit in your stomach and the thought in your head of "have I covered everything" and put my team in the best position to win....and then to run out the tunnel to a sea of noise and compete followed by the thrill of victory or the agony of defeats. SMU is a consideration because the path is only up and they can enjoy the victories here compared to going 8-4 and on the hotseat at UT. Nobody is more respected as a person than Mac Brown

Re: Latest coaching rumors
Since we do not have the restrictions Bennett had I am for going with a young energetic coach with a similar staff. #HammerDown
Re: Latest coaching rumors
But what about Mack Brown? ![]()
Re: Latest coaching rumorsI'll say this:
An older coach who has proven himself at a major program may be a little less likely to Bigger Better Deal us if he meets with success here - see Larry Brown or perhaps Frank Solich at Ohio. He might simply look at the job in terms of what he wants rather than trying to prove himself according to some other standard. Only question is if he's still hungry.
Re: Latest coaching rumors
Jimmy Sexton, called "college football's most powerful agent" by Sports Illustrated, lives in Memphis. He reps five current SEC coaches. I assume he is the source for the Fulmer and Chizik story. Coaching rumors reported by Memphis sports media should be taken seriously.
