Gosselin's buddy June Jones is responsible for SMU being "the worst major college football team in America" but of course that gets no mention.

Despite the unfortunate and somewhat misleading headline, I thought it was actually a pretty good article. The piece itself didn't seem unfair.

At least he refers to us as a "major" football team.

The comments are borderline crazy. There are truly some dumb people out there - who go to great lengths to prove it.

From Hart -
“Look around the landscape. Duke’s successful. Stanford’s successful. Vanderbilt, Northwestern … schools like us. I realize that academically we’re going to have to overcome some things to get those kids to choose SMU. But when you look at our setting in Dallas, the campus, the investments that have been made … now get a dynamic staff in here. That’s what we need.â€
Looks like we still have a ways to go to reform the academic policies, imagine that.

I interpreted that comment in a different way. Duke, Stanford, Vanderbilt, and Northwestern all recruit well in Texas. I like the fact that Hart considers SMU capable of being included as a peer among those schools. Private, academically focused but also competitive in athletics. Getting "those kids" to choose SMU means convincing high ranked football recruits from Texas who have the academic qualifications to attend one of the aforementioned schools to choose SMU. Stay close to home, play football, and get a good education. It will be a challenge for the next coach but not entirely impossible.

then you completely missed the point. Sorry this isn't about recruiting the Class President or at St. Mark's based on some high academic standard- its about recruiting in Desoto, Cedar Hill, Lancaster, Southlake, Coppell, Allen and other recruiting hotbeds for kids that can simply qualify under NCAA rules

Sure, from a recruiting standpoint can definitely see that underlying point as well.
When Hart directly says "academically were going to have to overcome some things to get those kids to choose SMU."
Pretty clear what Hart is saying.

I couldn't care less about the academic qualifications of the football recruits any more than I care how far a pre-med student can throw a football.
We don't need to compete with vandy, NW academically with our football recruits. Let's just put together a competitive football team and focus on academics separately

he is saying that since SMU has lowered its admission standards we have recruits who are scoring 500, 600 and yes almost 700 points lower on their SAT than the AVERAGE SMU student. The issue is how to graduate those kids. (according to the 2014 SMU Provost Report-someone was admitted to SMU with a 620 SAT and about 8 scored below 830)

I took the "overcome some things to get those kids to choose SMU" to be about convincing recruits that SMU academics aren't prohibitively difficult. It wasn't about convincing the school take the recruits, it was about convincing the recruits to take the school.
If this lines up with any of the previous arguments, it would be "we need to ensure the kids understand that we have athletically friendly majors"
My $.02 anyhow.

Or more to the point, the point Hart was making was about how to convince those kids that they can remain eligible and evenutally graduate from SMU so that they choose to come here (since they will be admitted here under current policy), rather than choose to go somewhere else they think will be easier.

That's more or less what I was trying to say. I'm on a monotonous conference call. not 100% focused on that, or this lol.
