I think this is a good sidebar to the Top 5 coaching candidates thread. What 3 characteristics or bullet points are most important for our next HC?
1. Proven recruiting excellence in DFW
2. Outstanding network of coaches that will follow/come here with ties to Texas/DFW
3. Relentlessly passionate about SMU and is a promoter of the program to fans, alumni, high schools, media, etc.

I would rather have a proven recruiter than one proven to recruit in such a limited geographical area. Based on that criteria, Ron Meyer would never have been consider for the SMU job.
Once again, I would rather have proven network of coaches with proven skills to coach and recruit regardless of Texas/DFW ties. Based on that criteria, Kemm the magnificent would have never been hired.
As previously stated, I don't care about passion. That is between lovers. I care about proven results when it comes to a multimillion dollar enterprise like major college football.

I agree with your list. I would emphasize 1 heavily. In fact, I think that recruiting is so vital for the new coach that coaching search info should almost be double posted to football and recruiting.

I want a recruiter like Mack Brown and someone who has a plan and markets the program like Larry Coker.

If we are keeping the list to three. I would change number 1 to say all of East Texas. I would also change number 2 - it would be my number 4.
2. Innovator
Until/If the talent matches that of the schools we want to play with, then we can't run the same schemes they do. Superior talent wins out. To offset the talent gap, we need to be constantly changing and surprising our opponents. Part of JJ's epic failure at SMU was that he refused to change his system.

A good recruiter can recruit anywhere. Chad Morris had limited recruiting ties in GA and FL, but he is cleaning up in those two states for Clemson.

I agree that a good recruiter can recruit anywhere, but I think the damage we have done to our relationships with DFW coaches requires a staff of coaches that can heal those wounds as quickly as possible. We already have a reputation of being aloof and somewhat snobbish and the apathy of the June Jones era did nothing to sway that stereotype. We need some guys that can walk into Skyline, Carter, SOC, Allen, Aledo, Mesquite, etc. and get kids to consider SMU.

Conference affiliation and lack of a home crowd are by far the biggest obstacles someone is going to have to overcome. I think everything else is no big deal

Larry Brown had no qualms about recruiting in those schools.
