Nothing all that groundbreaking, I admit, but it does go to show you the difference between even 10 years ago and now. If a player messed up the coach could simply run him into the ground and handle it internally, but now with iphones and the internet it's going to be front-page news.

You would think....but then you look down in the SEC and ACC south and start realizing that these schools, in small towns, have a racket set up. Unless someone does something on video or camera, the schools can rest comfortably knowing the police will investigate the accuser more than the player (no matter the situation), then pass off a soup sandwich to the DA, who throws his hands up (if he even takes it) and we all move on. It is more difficult, but definitely not impossible.

Covering up his players' crimes was the least of Switzer's sins. Bootlegger's Boy was more interesting for what Barry left out, not what he owned up to.

What is worse than covering up criminal activity?

I have a friend who played at BYU. The first thing they were given when the reported to campus was a Captain in the State Police's business card. If they ever got in trouble they called him and the problem went away. If it can happen at BYU it can happen anywhere.

The article stated Switzer admitted to covering up MINOR charges against players (that, by the way, makes him an accessory). But Switzer also covered up more serious crimes committed by his players when he could. He and his coaches also committed some themselves. One that actually made it into the newspapers was the altering of one recruit's (Kerry Jackson Gaveston Ball) HS transcripts to get him eligible to come to OU. Altering transcripts was actually a pretty small thing in Barry's world.
