One thing I think really damaged Bo were the blowout defeats. Even winning 9 games consistently does not make up for getting absolutely torched by a team like Wisconsin twice in a three year period. NU defenses of the 80's/90's under Osbourne/McBride were year in year out quite elite nationally.

Academics: not horrible, but below most B10 schools
Recruiting: with ginormous OL and DL no longer the recipe to winning, they don't have enough local talent to build the "elite" program that boosters demand.

While they should remain a good program (based upon tradition and fan support), the fans demands are going to be hard to meet.

Do not see academics as relevant. Yes, Nebraska is behind behind the Michigan/Illinois/Nwesterns of the world academically but so are a number of big 10 schools. Not relevant to the vast majority of elite football recruits.

The game has changed but Nebraska can adapt. Osbourne did it in the 90's and weathered a lot of early storms in the 70s to build a consistent top 10 team.

A tough job but with the right HC Nebraska is a sleeping giant imho.

During the Big 8 days, they really only had to beat OU to win the conference (74 titles between them). Their fans demand that kind of dominance; however, that kind of dominance will be impossible to replicate in the B10.
