Now that SMU will run an offense that employs tight ends, three of the players will be tried at the position in the spring are:
Jeremiah Gaines (listed on 2014 roster at 6-2, 230)
Justin Lawler (6-4, 259)
Chad Pursley (6-5, 260)

I briefly talked to Jeremiah about playing TE when I visited for practice during the season. I will be very interested to see how these 3 adjust and develop to the TE position.

I can see Gaines being a killer in this offense. He's got the versatility if he has the motor/motivation. He's similarly sized to Nick O'Leary. Don't have to be a monster to play TE in college depending on role. He's big enough. Can he block? Can he run solid routes? etc etc.

Gaines said he has been working hard to get stronger, and now weighs 240.

I think his role will expand beyond just the traditional "Tight End" role-its going to be a multi-purpose position

Gaines was a 3 star ranked #27 tight end by rivals with a bunch of p5 offers. I always wondered how he would fit into the old JJ system, which he never seemed to be able to be given the opportunity to play to his strength. He has two more years left, and I am sure HCCM will do his best to put the ball in the hands of play makers. Ready to finally see what this kid can do in #tempo.
I have seen several G5 schools be successful with a TE where the potential mismatch in size versus the secondary is more pronounced. This should be an interesting part of the new offense, especially running a hurry up to take advantage of a mismatch in coverage. Ready for some overhead projector free plays.

PP, wasn't Holloway working there for a while last year?

Yep, that's what I mean. He's got the athleticism to get all over the field. I really think DJ and Gaines are the playmakers. I also really like KC and it seems Gresham should be a beast. We have some pieces on offense if only the damn OL would come around. We still are missing that big outside WR with a burst though. Offensively, I think we won't be too bad. Again, I think it's the defense that will be our bane. We have no run stoppers and the secondary is just absolutely terrible. Will be interesting to see how much "coaching up" this staff can do there.

TE is worthless unless we find a good consistent RB and a much improved and more consistent QB.

Hey, I've seen a game in Moody last year so that qualifies me (see BB thread)! TEs block and run pass patterns. Without a runner and a passer, they are not very effective. TEs basically support the skill backfield positions and hopefully give those skilled positions more options.

He clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. He can't even spell ponytie correctly.

Always risky clicking on a Pony Fans thread titled "tight ends".
