Former SMU running back Eric Dickerson and pop music star Justin Bieber were neighbors in Calabasas, Calif.

When TMZ approached the Mustangs standout and Pro Football Hall of Famer to discuss the troubled music star's plea to fans that he's changed, Dickerson said there is hope for Bieber. He also explained what worked to keep a wild Dickerson in line in his younger years.

"He's a young man," Dickerson said. "If I was a young man and I had $100 million or whatever he has ... my mama would've whooped my [deleted], so I know what the deal would be. My mom wouldn't have it. I don't know where the mom and dad is. He could change."

When the interviewer requested Dickerson to elaborate on what punishment could do to help, he said there was no harm in it.

"A good ass-whooping never hurt nobody," Dickerson said. "Not a beating! But a good ass-whooping never hurt nobody, sure. I got 'em. The black parents don't mess around. I'm not saying every black parent does it. I don't want to get in trouble with the black mommies and daddies, but I got my [deleted] whipped and I'm happy I did. I was a bad-ass kid. It made me a better person, I don't know about a better running back, but a better person. I couldn't run from my mama. You got to go home. You can't stay out, you gotta go home."
