Four-year SMU safety earns academic honor

March 25, 2015

DALLAS (SMU) - Former SMU defensive back Hayden Greenbauer has been named a 2015 National Football Foundation Gridiron Club of Dallas Collegiate Scholar-Athlete, the foundation announced. The SMU senior will be honored with eight other college student-athletes on April 6 at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas.

SMU head coach Chad Morris will serve as the keynote speaker for the event, with award-winning sportscaster Scott Murray serving as the evening's emcee for the seventh consecutive year.

Greenbauer has already earned his bachelor's degree in finance, and is currently working toward his master's.

Greenbauer started all 12 games for SMU in 2014, leading the team in tackles with 79. Greenbauer totaled 148 tackles in his 35 career games, including 19 starts. The San Antonio-native also picked off three passes in his career, returning one for a touchdown in SMU's Hawaii Bowl victory over Fresno State during his sophomore season.

"We are incredibly proud of this year's scholar-athletes," said Gerald Brence, president of the NFF Gridiron Club of Dallas Chapter and the athletics director for the Plano Independent School District. "In the seventh year of our chapter, these athletes continue to impress, not only on the field competitively but also as scholars and young community leaders. It's always an honor to meet these young men, showcasing the great stories in North Texas that will inspire future student-athletes to excel in the classroom and become more involved in their communities."

Selected from a pool of candidates that covers the entire region, the nine collegiate players (listed below) earned NFF chapter scholar-athlete recognition in 2015. The selection committee, comprised of coaches, teachers, administrators and business leaders from North Texas, evaluated the college and high school candidates based on their athletic accomplishments, academic performance and leadership in the community.

Congratulations. It's pretty sad, though, when your safety is the team's leading tackler.
