Should the Texas Longhorns Leave the Big XII?

An independent UT could be beneficial for all.

The dinner, in 2014, was held to honor outgoing University of Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds, and the highly regarded AD yielded the floor to Del Conte upon his arrival. “All right Del,” Dodds said. “Let them have the story, my man.”

Indirectly, it makes a case that SMU should go independent. Hmm.

Don't see the case for SMU. Texas has its own network, so does BYU (albeit not pure sports). ND has a national television contract. Army has automatic weapons. SMU has none of the above.

Going independent means scheduling problems, no bowl games unless it's in the championship series or a bowl and fill its slate. Worth the hassle with a TV Network generating $15 million per year and an enormous alumni base generating seat license fees. Not a good move without.

Yeah, but if we play our cards correctly we could have our own network too. We would have to work on the ticket sales though for sure.

If you think SMU could launch its own TV network like Texas and BYU, please pass me whatever you're smoking.

Yeah, definitely doesn't make a case that we should go independent....let TU go that way and then we can have their spot in the Big XII.

In football the largest, richest programs should go independent and play a top schedule made for tv. All they care about is money, tv anyway and that way they don't have to be like UT ( a failure in competition but laughting all the way to the bank as they say). All other teams should play a regional schedule primarily with an occasional national game or two if warranted for national championships, etc. Non-revenue sports should play a regional schedule too. Regional cable networks need programing.

When I lived in the Park Cities, SMU had its own network on basic cable all throughout the '90s and the early 2000s.
