hey, all,

we were considering purchasing tickets to the football lunch later this month (if any are left). Can anyone give a run down about these? Is it coach morris talking for a while? About how long are they?

Thanks.

Lasts about 90 minutes... Maybe a little more. I think it is a "don't miss" event. Especially now.

Obviously this is all based on past events and could be different now. Two players or maybe a player and coach at each table. Speech from head coach. Interviews with a few players and the head coach by rich Phillips. Lots of fun, and as mentioned it should definitely be more fun this year.

I am going along with an SMU alum coworker and my father in law whose only connection to SMU is me.

These have always been great. I highly recommend that you attend, they will give you insights on the upcoming season.

Last year, Moose made several comments during the luncheon about how part of the Cowboys' success was the investment in a modern S&C program back in the day. I think it was a hint of things gone awry in the offseason.

Yes, we all know you want to blame last year on the S&C coach and nothing on bad recruiting even though most everyone could see it coming a mile away because of bad recruiting. So even though SMU had the same S&C coach when they were going to bowls with most of the key contributors being PB recruits. And once all of the PB recruits graduated it was downhill from there. But I know you and the previous coaching staff are buddies and you want to deflect the real cause which was poor recruiting by the staff. You still wish JJ was here don't you?

I hope we don't have a "guest" speaker. I'd rather hear from our own. Last year's speaker was a beating. Great person, great player, lousy speaker.

Didn't say he was a great speaker, but I thought it was interesting foreshadowing. I couldn't tell if he was calling out the staff for not being modern enough or the players for not participating in it. There was a lot of conflict between Mel and the team heading into last season.

And that isn't a defense of the coaching staff, because that is who brought Mel on board. One of many missteps heading into last season.

Play nice fellas.

Clearly there were things the former staff did well, and other areas where they completely laid an egg. Recruiting primarily by video tape clearly doesn't work, to name the most obvious. But in JasonB's defense, the fact that several athletes had identical workout-related injuries and the fact that many football players elected to train outside SMU and hire independent S&C coaches is beyond ridiculous. The two issues are not exclusive, and in fact, might be related. If, for example, Vic was still around to train and motivate our kids for the last 4 (or whatever) years, we might have a higher opinion of the former regime's recruits.

I guess we won't have to wait too much longer to find out.

Wow, they did? That's a new wrinkle. Hadn't seen it before; exceptionally plausible.

It's not uncommon in the off season to hire trainers .

It is uncommon, however, to purposely stay home off campus over the summer so that you can train with your trainers and avoid the SMU S&C staff. And you are so sick of the old school strength activities that Mel supported that you go in the complete opposite direction and focus on agility instead of strength and conditioning. Which is seriously what happened.

How much were we paying Mel?

Agreed. Especially over the summer. And since your son played FBS football you probably know what you are talking about.
