Jim Dent-Sportswriter

Postby LakeHighlandsPony » Fri Aug 14, 2015 9:45 pm

I found this amazing series about SMU Alum Jim Dent. I am curious if some of you know him. I am guessing Mrydel and Ponyte probably do with his Arkansas roots. He is a fantastic writer and hope he kicks his demons one day. If you have not read 12 mighty orphans about the Fort Worth Masonic School's football team back in the 20's or 30's I highly recommend.

He was a great sports writer. I recommend The a Junction Boys, if you have not read it

Very interesting article.

I mentioned JIm Dent and Junction Boys in a recent addition to the thread about the death of John David Crow, but did not realize he was an SMU man until saw this piece.

He was (s?) a very good writer and I'd repeat my earlier recommendation to read the book.

I wish him well with his drinking problem but it looks like he's in pretty deep.

His book about the Big 33 game was terrible. Some of the content of his books are simply not true although they are entertaining and he chooses interesting subject matter.

I worked with Jimmy at the Daily Campus sports department from 1971-73, along with Mike Granberry, now with the Dallas News, and Pamela Martin, who went on to anchor ABC News in Atlanta.
Jimmy was a very good high-school fullback/linebacker but suffered a career-ending knee injury.
He was a great guy to work alongside. l last saw him at a small dinner party at Mike's residence
in San Diego in the early 1980's (Mike was covering major league baseball for the L.A. Times at the time). It was one of those priceless reunions that I will never forget.
I'm quoted in the Dallas News' article; it's devastating to learn that he is now serving a lengthy prison sentence. I wish everyone knew the good side of Jimmy that I know.
