ECU Starting QB out for year

Assume this has to help us out somehow...

Just a week after Kurt Benkert was named East Carolina's starting quarterback, the redshirt sophomore saw his season end before it began.

Benkert suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during Tuesday evening's practice, seemingly opening the vacant quarterback position after the graduation of three-year starter Shane Carden once again.

The Cape Coral, Fla., native injured his knee trying to make a cut in the open field running full speed. It was a non-contact injury. Wednesday morning's MRI confirmed a torn ACL, according to multiple sources.

East Carolina confirmed the injury with a release mid-Tuesday afternoon.

"Everyone in college football is affected by injuries and we are no different," ECU head coach Ruffin McNeill said. "I am disappointed for Kurt because he has worked so hard for this opportunity. We've got a lot of talent on this team and we'll be asking everyone to step up."

The release said that juniors Cody Keith and Blake Kemp will compete for the starting position going forward.

Terrible for the player. Not really sure that helps us that much, their replacement should be ready by Oct. 3. It does give Cinci an easier path to a perfect season and an access bowl, and money for the AAC. For the conference I hope they don't lose to Townson in their opener. I was hoping ECU had a shot at upsetting Florida in their bowl game rematch in week two, even without their former OC.

ECU was the biggest unknown in the league coming into this season after losing the OC, QB, and WR. Not sure how big of a difference there is between the QBs, but this is a big setback for them. Could be a winnable game for us at Ford.

If it was going to happen, I wish it had been the week before they played us.
