Massive improvementin the offensive line

Amazing what a S&C program can do, isn't it? In the first half tonight, we were pushing them off the ball. Last year, Baylor pushed us 5 yards in the backfield every single play and gave us half a second to throw. What an incredible difference in one year.
6-6. Matt Davis. Too bad that Sutton doesn't have the speed to get by a "real" team... oh, wait...

Massive is an understatement. It helped that Baylor's best defensive player was suspended, but I kept waiting for Matt to get killed back there (sorry, I'm used to it) and he was pretty much untouched behind the line of scrimmage. We are going to be just fine this year.

It wasn't just the line, the scheme providing angles and limiting blitzes helps a lot too.

plus you got a TE, an occasional H-Back, fullback or 2 backs to make the numbers better-but I did think they showed great improvement. Play action and the counteraction plays from multiple players in the backfield slows the rush too. The Run N Shoot was always unstable-the bet is they can unload a pass in 3-4 seconds before the DLM unload on the QB. If the Run N Shoot QB doesn't release the ball in 4 seconds-there are going to be sacks

Incredible effort! Depth problems will always rear ugly head in the heat. Baylor could rotate players and we could not. The future is bright.

I think this more of what it is. I think if Davis did not have the legs he had he would have been sacked more. We will find out more about the OL next week. As far as the entire team goes due to poor recruiting our depth is not good. And the announcers noticed that often during the game. Coach Morris is going to turn it around though.

Our discipline on rush lanes was atrocious.

Or if you have 5 400 lb Polynesians that can allow you to hold the ball for 7 seconds, that works too

.

Last year, I remember watching Davis spin away from one Baylor guy and getting drilled by two others. It wasn't just the scheme. The players are much better because they actually have a strength program and an actual OL coach. When a true frosh (evan brown) comes in and is your strongest player, it isn't an indication that he is super strong - it is usually a hint that nobody else is lifting.

That's not true. Weeks was lifting a few donuts.

I would tend to agree with Stallion and WordUp. It was much more scheme that an SC issue. If so our DL would have not been pushed around so much ecause they had the same SC coach. Briggs and Lasecki are legit FBS type O linemen that have the athleticism needed. I think SMU needs to get more athletic linemen both offensively and defensively. Remember Baylor was with their 2 stud DE's. The offensive line benefited mostly from a competent offensive line coach and have a scheme that helped them as well as adding a TE.

From a build perspective, Weeks and Briggs were unrecognizable. They were obvious workout warriors in the S&C program.

BU brought heavy blitzes on those plays last year with very few this year. OL improved but apples to oranges comparison here.

Our quarterbacks didn't end most plays this year looking up at the pretty clouds. Whatever they did, the line is improved and giving us a chance.
