BU notes from Big Al

Postby ALEX LIFESON » Sun Sep 06, 2015 7:30 pm

We've all patted ourselves on the back for the first half. So, I won't cover that. This isn't gospel, just a few observations. Baylor made adjustments at halftime, and outgained us with nearly 500 yards to 100 in the 2nd half. The Bears only had 1 yard of offense in the 2nd quarter, and still finished with 728 yards. I was disappointed we couldn't score on their backups in the 4th. Chad Hudland did a good job in his debut, and all kicks in the endzone plus made his PAT's. Freshman punter Josh Williams shanked a couple, but had a decent night other than that. BU only returned one punt and one kickoff. The coverage was good on both. Our kick returns are going to be much improved.

Surprised how poor the whole defense tackled.
Jonathon Yenga-the 5th year SR looks no different, still can't tackle. Anthony Rhone maybe?
Nick Horton-missed too many tackles.
David Johnson-terrible debut at CB, maybe that's why the 5th year SR was 3rd string at Mizzou.
Ajee Montes-ouch.
Jordan Wyatt-Good debut as a RS freshman S. His backup Troy Castle was immediately abused.
AJ Justice-only played on special teams, curious as to why he never got time at one of the safety spots?
We played 8 d-lineman, Hollie never got in-not a good sign. RS junior Elie Nabushosi-is he still on the team?
Kyran Mitchell-got to find a way, to get the RS freshman LB more time.
Derek Longoria- senior LB can't get on the field besides ST's?
Deon Green-I'm hoping for more from the 4 star d-tackle.
Mitchell Kaufman-True freshman TE blocked well and caught the only ball thrown his way.
Jeremiah Gaines-I was a bit disappointed-dropped the only pass thrown his way-and whiffed on some blocks.
Braylon Hyder-not a bad job replacing the injured Daniel McCarty....Needs to get in better shape.

On the punt shanks, I wondered if Williams wasn't trying to kick the ball out of bounds inside the 20 on one and if he wasn't trying to keep it away from a return on the second shank. Of course, the one punt that ended up on about the 3 yardline was a great punt.

I wouldn't call two shanks a good day punting. It's like, other than that Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?

We need a LOT more hang time and at least 5-10 more yards.

Solid game notes.

I said, "Josh Williams shanked a couple, but had a decent night other than that". Didn't say good.

Gracias SMU86. Zelt Minor has to push forward. He tired quickly and tapped his helmet to come out. Castille and Thomas need to learn quickly, Walker, Malone and 5th year senior Darrius Joseph are not physical enough to hold blocks.

Castille and Thomas look like they are pretty good sized players. I think they learn the offense by the JMU game.

Line had at least 3 key blocks in first half-he can be effective in this offense especially as an H-Back

I agree. He won't dazzle anyone with his speed, but P Line is a dependable football player.

Thanks for getting us back to reality.

We Lost and you wrote the reasons why. HCCM will recruit and coach these players to step up in the next few years.

Met his cousins kid today as I checked out at Academy Sports today. Getting some coffee tables for the tailgate area. Sweet girl and talks really well about mom's cousin.

Yes, invited them to come tailgate with us.

I thought he showed a little more patience on his running as well - didn't do the scrappy doo run immediately into the back of a blocker thing.

Good observations! 44 is Yenga's backup. I thought all of the LBs really struggled, including star outside of number 11. I'll be interested to see if Rhone moves back in front of Horton.
