Cavan (having played as a college QB himself) was [deleted] Josh and he just couldn't handle it. Did make some bonehead throws and poor decisions but clearly had the physical tools

Looks like once he transferred he made better decisions. I wonder if it was some kind of magic brain drain centered on SMU or if it could be coaching

Lack of ability was not why he left SMU. It was not why we lost many games either.

Part of the problem back then was that he had to run for his life.

No. That was Ben Gazzara, not Josh.

I do believe McCown left for reasons other than football performance. Trying to remember completely, but unless I am confused he had some academic "issues."

I remember him against NC State and he was sacked multiple times in that game. Perhaps that was the only game that happened.

Cavan was a train wreck when it came to his handling of QB's. Instead of selecting the best and building him up, he was constantly swapping guys in/out and destroying their confidence.

I mean this as a serious question. How in the hell do you lack ability to play at a level infinitely below the pros? Maturity maybe. But lack of ability?

Josh was well recruited out of high school, struggled here, blew doors at SHSU and has held his own in the NFL.

Scratching my head.

Electrical interference at Ford. Inhibits cell phone connectivity and players' brains.

That's as good a theory as any. Cause he's only sucked on our campus.

Exactly. Ability wasn't the problem. We had serious offensive line issues and no running game in the 2 years he started (sound familiar?). In 1999 and 2000 we averaged 3.1 and 3.3 yds/carry. Even last year's "worst offense ever" managed 3.3 ypc. So you can imagine what an even worse running game looked like.

He spent most of his SMU career running for his life which led to bad decisions which led to a lot of interceptions. Cavan's solution was to rotate QBs, so McCown left. He knew he had a shot at the NFL, but he needed to be somewhere else.

he was the best qb i ever saw who threw perfect spirals to the defensive end. you can't coach that kind of talent.
