There's another first-year head coach in the state of Texas with interest in the South Carolina job and it's a name that should be familiar to most Gamecocks fans.

SMU head coach Chad Morris, who was the offensive coordinator at Clemson from 2011-14, is interested in returning to the Palmetto State and leading the Gamecocks, according to sources familiar with him.

Morris has struggled to a 1-5 record during his first season with the Mustangs, but under his watch they've shown signs of life without having very much talent to work with (they literally have the least-talented roster in the American Athletic Conference). SMU was competitive against Big 12 titans Baylor and TCU earlier this season.

Sources indicate Morris feels he could win at South Carolina if given the opportunity and could assemble a high-level coaching staff that could recruit. Also, there is a feeling that he could help turn the tide with in-state recruiting given his contacts he established in the Palmetto State during his time with the Tigers.

On South Carolina's end, we have not heard Morris mentioned, but new candidates are popping up every day.

I don't think there is much of a reason to worry but I was just saying South Carolina may want to speak with him and 3 mil is not a lot when an SEC team wants you which is a compliment to Coach Morris in my opinion.

Haven't had anyone legitamtely want our coach since Ron Meyer. Weird feeling.

I happened to be there that fateful day at the Kinkos in Old Town. JJ's faxed interview caused quite a stir in the store. They tried to charge JJ for the fax cover letter, which he was having none of because SMU wouldn't reimburse him for cover letters. I remember hearing him mumble "I should be a Sun Devil, man! And not dealing with this b.s." Plus, he was telling them to hurry because he had a 2pm tee time he couldn't be late for....

Morris isn't going anywhere for at least another year or two. A major program like South Carolina isn't going to hire Chad Morris after one year at likely 3-9 or worse at SMU. We love what he is doing in turning around the dumpster fire left by the Hawaiian fraud but he needs to win before he can be a real candidate for some high level jobs.

Now in 2017/2018 I could definitely see his name being mentioned for some P5 jobs.
