The reason I am posting this is because I believe that some on this board had expectations that were way too high. It is going to take time because JJ and his staff did not leave JJ much. BOP did a nice job his roster analysis. I want to post it gain so that we can adjust our perspective. blackoutpony wrote:I was bored over the weekend, so I put this together while hiding from my family and drinking beer. Below is a full list of what next years roster is (as of now) and the players ranking out of high school along with their FBS/ P5 offers.
A few Notes.... 1. All the rankings and offers came from rivals. 2. Graduating players were left off, since I'm trying to show what Morris actually has. 3. I tried to change all the years that they players will be, but may have messed up a few with red shirts and such (I wasn't always watching the garbage time during games and am too lazy to look at the participation sheets) 4. I did not include SMU offers in the total offers number 5. I'm really looking at other offers for the players, because as Stallion has said 2 billion times, it really does show what other coaches think about their ability to play at an FBS level as opposed to rivals or scout guys. 6. Please let me know if there are any mistakes and I'll change it up asap. 7. I can't seem to get the spacing the way I want it, so sorry it's a little hard to read.....
Now for some things that stuck out to me.... 1. My goodness this team is devoid of talent. There are 88 players on the roster for next year as of now and 48 of those had no other FBS offers. No other college coach thought 55% of our roster deserved to play FBS football. 2. The top offer getter at each position on offense (Davis, Gresham, Gains, Myers) had a total of 65 offers. The rest of the offense only had 46. WOW. 3. 10 out of 18 Offensive Lineman had no other offers and only Seaver Myers had more than two. No wonder it looks like swiss cheese on Saturdays.... 4. 7/14 D Line with no other offers.... 5. JR Richardson had the same number of P5 offers as the rest of the DB's combined... Which is 2 total. 6. The tiki QB guru recruits out of high school totaled 3 other offers (no P5) and all 3 were from Burcham. 7. Yenga had 5 offers and the rest of the linebackers combined had 6.
This is going to be a tough rebuild. Coach Morris is going to need some time here, because there really just isn't much to work with at all. It's gonna suck, but we need to be patient.

Who is worst? June & Co, the clueless boosters who didn't fire him after ASU, or the crazy June cult members who supported him into the coaching grave?

June gets the number 1 ranking. Any human with any self-worth wouldn't act like the way he did and just give up. Then a close second those responsible for not canning him sooner. Fans have no fault, they're just idiots.

Excellent Excellent Work Rebel.
There are almost 90 players listed. If you had 3 P5 offers, you were a Top 5 recruit in terms of offers. If you had 2 P5 offers, you were tied for 6th. That's simply amazing and then some on this board are surprised when we get our asse$ handed to us every year by old SWC foes.
Also, look at the few who do have P5 offers.
Matt Davis with 17 offers and contributes 2/3rds of our total offense. Gaines with 11 offers is one of our top receivers, Sutton 2 offers is our best. Seaver Meyers 5 offers, we could have used him this year. Yenga 2 offers is 2nd in team in tackles.

Overall, HCCM has to recruit a lot more speed. We have terrible overall team speed. And our Defensive closing speed is tortoise like compared to other teams. That is stuff that has to be recruited cause speed isn't coached up into a kid. Every position needs talent and depth but speed is the denominator in all those positions (save OT and kickers).

It seemed like the majority of the P5 offer recipients are RS Jrs. I remember Klemm being touted for his recruiting prowess. Do these stats affirm that assumption?

Put some parachutes on those kids all-day every day to build strength Also, not being scared of the other players (not tackling).

The years all kind of run together for me now, but I'm thinking Klemm's guys would be older than RS juniors at this point, and may already have graduated. Could be wrong.

You aren't looking at a function of recruiting ability but recruiting effort. This is what not caring, or possibly intentionally sabotaging, looks like

There are reasons most of these guys didn't have many/any offers. These kids were all good high school players, but coaches have to project how each player will perform at the next level. What I've seen, other than the general size and speed disadvantage, is that they are not as instinctive as the players they play against. They could get by in high school, but as the game speeds up at the college level, they can't. They take wrong pursuit angles. There is a slight hesitation reacting to what the other team is doing, which at this level puts them out of position and unable to recover. This is talent or lack of.
The reason the practice reports come back so good is that we are practicing against ourselves. We're pretty evenly matched playing against ourselves.....
This is getting fixed, but will take time.

The closer you are to a situation the more likely you are to overrate your own team
I picked up on this as a kid-I noticed in every DCTF article and every preseason interview teammates always thought their team was definitely going to contend for a Conference Championship while other more objective observers knew they had no chance-(unless you went to Baylor in 1974 which actually was a miracle season).

Yes, it is a dead horse. However it is a dead horse we have had to saddle up and sit on (not ride really) - so that makes it relevant.
Please shake HCCM's hand and thank him for taking this on, and ask what you can do to help next time you see him. It is no fun turning something like this around if you feel like you are doing it by yourself.
Not that we can help much, but words of encouragement are important at key times, I don't care how much money you make.
