Silver Linings

With apologies to Myrdel:

The halfback option pass, from Xavier Jones to Xavier Castille for a 39-yard touchdown, was run to perfection. And both players are true freshmen.

I think that play perfectly explained the state of the depth on the team.

can't wait until we see "the rest of that play" with the sweep/run-pass option turning into a sweep/reverse/run-pass option. Not sure we have the players on campus yet to pull that off but it was fun watching South Carolina run that play yesterday against the Aggie$ in the red zone. Talk about putting pressure on a defense!

Defense played good for the most part.

kick returns were as good as we've seen this year; generally gave us good field position to start

A few defensive players had good games including David Johnson and R.C.Cox. Defensive line played better against the running game. Defensive backs were better. Not as many wide open receivers. The offensive line looked better (still had problems particularly on quickness and sticking with blocks). Prescott Line had a pretty good game. Good to have him back. Gaines had a good day. The play overall was better this week. It could be the opponent. But, I liked the overall improvement. SMU had two glaring mistakes and a number of not so glaring ones that detracted from the overall team play. But, there is lots of pressure on the team and mistakes will happen each week. They are part of the game.

Gaines missed a few big blocks that put Davis on his back and killed drives. I cannot agree with him having a good game.

I was going to say the same thing! Gaines did a poor job blocking. The defender would run right by him to Davis.

He's had this problem most of the year. I have to admit, he's been a bit of a disappointment.

Gains did miss some blocks but I still thought he was improved over the last few games as for pass routes. And though I haven't taken the time to review the video, I kinda included him and all the blockers when I commented on the line blocking efforts. Nevertheless, I will change in agreement to say Gains had a better game.

Lots of misunderstanding between him and the tackle. He gets caught a lot where he doesn't think somebody is his guy, and then realizes it after it is too late and the guy is already past, and makes a last ditch attempt at a block.
