Comparing Chad Morris and June Jones' Inagural Seasons

Postby Stallion » Sun Nov 08, 2015 4:44 pm

Its basically a push on defense

in 2008 SMU gave up 523 yards per game (117 out of 119) and this year they are giving up 525 (122 out of 128)

Plus the schedule is harder this year with explosive offenses TCU, Baylor, yes James Madison, UH, Tulsa already played and Navy and Memphis coming up

In 2008 we played a very good Texas Tech team and TCU but a CUSA schedule some of which of course followed us into the AAC

Re: SMU Defense in 2008 under June and 2015 basically a Push

On Offense we averaged 314 yards per game in 2008 (101 out of 119) 21.3 points per game. This year we average 412 yards per game (56 out of 128) and exactly 30 points per game

Chad Morris took over a historically bad offense which was No. 127 out of 128 which averaged 269 yards per game and 11.1 points per game. (That's PLUS +71 freaking fantastic). -June Jones took over a pretty decent offense from Phil Bennett which had been the No. 52 offense in 2007 that had averaged 423 yards per game and 28.3 points per game (That's NEGATIVE -49)

we should be applauding the amazing offensive turn-around on Offense under Chad Morris-almost 3 times more points

He hasn't been able to put his imprint on defense since very few true freshman contribute-that will change BIG TIME in 2016 I guarantee you. his players will play next year. Its going to be rough but the Defensive Rebuild starts in 2016

Of course, both coaches basically changed QBs as JJ inherited a talented Justin Willis and discarded him as a bad fit, going with a true Frosh in Bo Levi whereas Morris inherited a guy in Davis who was sitting most of last year behind Burcham, Cassell & Krstich but at least had a skill set a little more compatible with what Morris wants to run. Big difference was the other skill guys Morris was able to recruit (RBs & WRs) compared to JJ. Let's just hope Morris' 1st meeting vs Navy goes better than JJ's did.

And Chad has a MUCH tougher schedule, and a much less talented team - so even if it was even it would be big win to Chad.

Also, how many future NFL players did JJ inherit vs. Chad? Chad maybe has one in Sutton

The Offense and Special Teams are vastly improved. Bottom line, Morris' staff has clearly improved things in both areas using June's players as a foundation.

The Defense is arguably worse than Mason's defense last year. But, the players were recruited for a 3-4 and don't really fit the new scheme. For the most part, Morris' recruits have not been able to contribute (which is normal for true freshman defensive players). Until Morris' recruits start taking over the bulk of the playing time, we won't really know if Malone (and his staff) are up to the job of coaching up the defense.

I'd throw Margus in there, because he was recruited by our track coach, not JJ

Beasley was recruited by Bennett and committed to Bennett. Stayed on with JJ and signed.
