Quick Thoughts

- First, really happy for the seniors. Zach Wood looked like he was playing his heart out tonight. Great to see the emotion from Kristich when he was in the game.
- Looking at the schedule, we played 6 Very Good teams (TCU, Baylor, Houston, Memphis, Navy, Temple), We played 4 Above Average to average G5 teams (ECU, UCF, Tulsa, JMU), and We played 2 bad G5 teams (UNT, Tulane).
- I think that it is obvious now that SMU does not have "bad" G5 talent on the team. We are physically/athletically superior to "bad" G5 teams. I would say the base talent on the team is probably "Below average", a bit of "average talent mixed in and then a subset of players (defense number 4, Wood, Gentry, Lawler; offense Davis, Thomas, Jones, West, Sutton, Gaines) who are above average in talent at the G5 level.
- Tonight the offense looked like what we expected it to coming into the season - a ton of misdirection and quick decision making at QB on limited reads. I'm not sure what lead to Matt holding the ball too long for the past few weeks.
- To me, it looks like when Van Malone has a favorable matchup in the secondary, which he did tonight and against UNT, he plays an extremely aggressive defensive style that can be dominant at times.
- The concern is the night and day difference when we aren't dominant athletically. Great coaches find ways to devise schemes when you don't match up as well, to keep you competitive. You can't just man up and teach the kids a lesson. Even Larry switched to zone his first year to keep us from getting run out of the gym every game. If we have these performances against "bad" teams, then that means our talent level is probably in the "below average" category on defense. While I don't expect that level of talent to be competitive against very good teams, I would expect it to at least be somewhat competitive against the average teams. The fact that it hasn't been is a bit worrisome.

There will be many upper classmen that are not on the team next year. No production means no ship... Bus ticket home. The one that shall not be named left poo at SMU ... not all poo but you get the blind hog and acorn thing.

Love the young guys fight tonight. This staff will do WOW things at SMU, given the time and, IF they want to stay.

What can you do to support this new energetic staff? Donate, buy tickets, talk SMU up at your local high school and come to the games.

Peace love and Go Mustangs

I talked to a current coach tonight and the IPF is a MUST. And a shovel needs to be put in the Ground RIGHT NOW for recruiting. It can't be promises it has to be done! We have no time to waste!

Tonight was the farewell for 30 seniors. How many more does the staff plan to run off? Remember SMU can only sign 25 (plus any leftover from Feb.) so if they run off substantially more, the overall roster numbers will drop significantly.

Exactly. Because we desperately need depth, anyone who puts in the work will have a chance to return. Only the malcontents will be "run off."

While there were some decent starters and contributors among those 30 starters, there were zero point zero difference makers in that group. No skill position starters, no defensive playmakers, and no dominant OL.

If SMU would only send out a packet, with a rendering, with coach testimonies on how it would help us grow, and asking for donations to a fund specifically for the IPF, they might get surprised what they get back. As it is now, the concept for this IPF is like what you'd get if you asked a 12-year old to draw the "coolest" car -- it would have rockets and lasers and soda dispensers and cost eleventy-billion dollars. Our efforts to build our $100M wonder haven't been clear or serious.

Good win for the team. Bottom line is most everyone has been saying we have below average talent on the team, except one person that thought we had mostly average talent with some average players on the team. We have mostly below average talent which means a lot of players should have never been offered D1A scholarships. We have to recruit better and we will with this coach. We can't gave the JJ mentality of waiting to play mostly bad teams to win. And Larry Brown did not play a lot of zone in his first year. We just did not have a point guard in the first tear he was hear but had decent overall talent unlike the football team. This is not Coach Malone's fault as JasonB (and footballdad) continually ad nauseam try to imply. Stallion has the correct viewpoint of what is going on in that HCCM recruited offense last year and is recruiting defense this year. We just have to be patient.

ad nauseam........says the king of ad nauseam! You parrot the same crap every day, 10x a day, on 5 different threads per day. Never an original thought either, favorite line always begins with...'like Stallion says.'
