3 best defensive players from 2014 graduated-very little new players were added. Yet

2014: (Mason) yielded 499.4 yards per game (122 out of 128)
2015: (Malone) yielded 502.2 yards per game (119 out of 127)

we've sucked on defense for quite awhile now-the common denominator is lack of talent with very little infusion with which Malone had to work with. Next year could be worse as we will rely on more true and redshirt freshman than at anytime since 1989

Well hey, there's a fantastic excuse. We've always sucked, and Malone sucked just a little worse. We hired you with no expectation for improvement, so congrats on a job well done Mr. Malone.

Well, we did double our win total from last year and defense is half the team, so in theory we did have improvement.

Right, and in Mason's first year he was going against weaker competition in CUSA. Mason did not improve until the next year when he got Marquise Frazier, Taylor Reed and JG Davis.

hey I posted after both Baylor and TCU games that I wasn't sure our defense was improved at all-even when expectations were rising-I haven't been fooled by this defense all season

I'm going to focus on the recruiting class-Prime Time Player Ken McLaurin just made 2 key 4th quarter defensive plays to stop Amarillo Tascosa drives and lead a furious 4th Q comeback victory 41-34. Ryan now 13-0. See McLaurin thread-the players that are gonna solve this problem are discussed on the Recruiting board not in this year's lineup

I see the point, but go back to a key component of coaching; you coach your players and team best by taking the talent and skills you have and using them to their greatest efficacy. Hence, all cried foul when we were being steamrolled last season on defense and they weren't hitting in practice. Well, seems many question some calls made by the defensive coaches this year. Either way, next year will be better because even with weaker results, we will be watching and following the future in its infancy. That may go over many heads, but alas, that's where we are.

yes but Strength of Schedule was easily stronger this year

Considering all improvements on offense in points scored in 2015, I think in reality, despite similar talent, our defense was much worse in 2015 then in 2014 when the D basically lived on the field each game with few points being scored in 2014. We all know HCCM is a great offensive coach, but the D looks like a different story.

One could argue that our lack of competitiveness on offense last year helped Mason's numbers. Baylor would have but 90 on us in the opener if we hadn't knocked out their starter and been so incompetent on offense that Briles ran the ball non-stop in the second half.

On the other hand, you could also argue that this year's team wouldn't be able to stop the run even if they knew it was coming .

Not only didn't we score points in 2014, it felt like some games we never got a first down + horrid ST play led to bad field position.

As I posted on another thread, 2015 was a failure on defense because we didn't develop any reliable LB's or DB's. Most of that was talent related, some of it was injuries, and some of it had to be coaching.

Essentially, the 2015 was a like taking a giant dose of @@@@ - cleansing but stinky and messy.

In 2016, we will have 7-10 starting jobs + all 11 backup jobs in play. If Malone can't coach a lot of kids up, it will be ugly.

and Memphis would have scored a hundred and ten, twenty?
