Coach Tree of High School Coach a Decade Ago Grows to 4

Todd Graham Coaching Tree:

Auburn's Gus Malzhan
SMU's Chad Morris
Kansas David Beatty
Memphis's Mike Norvell

Guess who Chad Morris patterned his Coaching Staff after? His mentor Todd Graham who had to beg him twice to join his staff. Most of these guys are still youngsters and all had High School backgrounds when they were hired except Norvell who was hired as a Graduate Assistant by Graham at Tulsa. BTW there are other well respected coaches still in Graham's tree.

I still remember wondering on Ponyfans why SMU didn't hire Graham about 14-15 years ago. This is how you turn a second tier program around-there is evidence all around that this is the new standard. Don't [deleted] and moan about their youth because that is exactly the trait that will be crucial in turning this program around. Have some faith and admire and recognize their unprecedented hard work they've put in during their first 2 recruiting classes

actually realized Graham also hired Bill Blankenship an experienced Tulsa high school legendary coach with 20 years of high school experience, 3 State Championships, 7 Championship appearances and while he was eventually fired after 4 years he did take Tulsa to Bowls with a 11-3 record(CUSA West Championship) and 8-5 record

So Coaching Tree is at 5

I was wondering the same about why we didn't hire Briles a long time ago as well.

I think that's my biggest complaint about the tiki hire. I've seen it plenty of times in the business world. Individuals in their 50's resting on their laurels and not having the passion/work ethic needed to do the job. And of course this is a unique high-energy job. In hindsight, someone who so embraces the Hawaiian culture should have been a huge red flag.

Same reason I didn't want Mack Brown.

Most of the hires this year have been young up and coming coordinators who can recruit. Not many or any retread hires with the exception of Richt but that certainly was a unique situation. It's crazy to me that a guy like Greg Schaino can't get a Job like Syracuse!

Guy on this board complain about Jones not recruiting when they should be complaining about the people who let him be hired. Jones record in recruiting at UH was about the same as at SMU, look at all aspects of hire before proceeding with hire.

Another mark against the guy who hired June. In theory, at the time, he was a great hire. Credibility. Gravitas, all that stuff. But the AD should have had direct, clear, and pointed questions about staff composition, recruiting, staff budget, philosophy, etc. Either the AD completely whiffed on incredibly important questions, or the interviewee flat out lied.
