So they get our punter, and Dallas Cowboys get Carson Wentz. I will take that trade.

Coach Morris has made it clear he "prefers" Texas kids and the competition between Josh Williams (TX) and Koonce (CA) was close enough that presumably the job is Williams' going forward. Of course, there are 2 other TX kids listed as punters on the roster, so you never know who might finally earn the job. Last year, Koonce averaged 39.6 yds and had 6 of his 27 punts fair caught. Williams averaged 38.7 and had only 5 punts fair caught, but I don't have stats on their average "net" yardage. Williams did have 11 punts inside the 20 and Koonce only 3, so that may affect the averages. From watching last year, I felt Koonce had the stronger leg and better hang time, but he frequently out kicked the coverage and gave up more long returns. All in all, our punting game was just "average" last year and is an area that will hopefully improve. Williams was just a FR so he will undoubtedly get stronger. Meanwhile, Koonce goes to a championship team and doesn't have to sit a year. Good move for all concerned

We need Josh if we ever play on a field with a dog leg left

I would have thought that Josh Williams had enough plays as a specialist to letter last year but that is not reflected on the roster at SMUMUSTANGS.

Can't afford to waste two scholarships on punters, but who is going to kick field goals next year?

The roster hasn't been updated yet.

Josh Williams will handle the kicking duties next year, his scholarship was for his kicking. He only punted last year because of need. Stotts will take over snapping on punts with Woods graduating. Stotts handled all snaps last year for XP's and FG's. Williams could punt as well, but they are hoping he won't have to, they are looking for a transfer or a walk-on. Still have to find a holder with Krstich graduating.

Anything would be better than last year's "punting". I was surprised he was only the 8th worst punter in D-1 with his second-team all district level of stats.
Congrats to NDSU for getting that kid's backup.

Thank you for the insight. Sounds like we are basically hitting the reset button when it comes to punting. Hopefully we pick someone up.
