Good luck to Kelvin. He seems to be a fine young man.

Just saw another report that says Beachum is in talks with the Jets and the Seattle Seahawks.

Why would PIT let him go?

Looks like the Steelers are, at the very least, preparing a Plan B in case Beachum goes elsewhere. Reports emerged Sunday saying that Pittsburgh has offered a contract to free agent Seattle tackle Russell Okung.

Same reason any NFL team let's players walk (especially Pats & Steelers), they don't think his production is a good enough value for the contract he is demanding.

He just needs his agent to find a desperate team with money to spend.

For example, the Jets have Geno Smith and Bryce Petty under contract. As a Season Ticket Holder, I can tell you that I would be unhappy if either of those two guys started game 1 for the Jets.

The Jets would like to sign Fitzpatrick to play QB again for a reasonable amount of money given his limited skillset. But, the Broncos/Browns might be desperate enough to throw stupid money at him.

As it pertains to Beachum, the Jets have some salary cap issues and two expensive (and older) tackles. Cutting either of the old tackles would easily pay for Beachum and leave a little extra cap room for other needs.

Too much money in the NFL usually gets you cut before the end of a contract. Guaranteed $$$ is the only safe bet.

Per the article (link below), Jags decline option for 2017 on Luke Joeckel, meaning he will become a free agent after the upcoming season. Interesting that the article also says Beachum is "favored to replace Joeckel" — maybe the writer means next year, but it sounds like this year.

You don't bring in a guy who has started for one of the better teams in the league and expect them to be a backup. Jax is obviously unhappy with the performance of Joeckel and brought Beach in to win the job.

The prevailing thought around Jacksonville is that he has been a disappointment. He is often injured and hasn't seem to fully adjust to the pro game. I think the plan for this season is to give him a chance to beat out Beachum, but it is more likely they will try to move him back to the right side.

Right — I get that. But you also don't throw away a first-round draft pick (and the investment made in that player) without giving him every opportunity to succeed. I would think they were thinking of having an open competition, but I read the story to say they (or at least the author of the story) expected Joeckel to sit on the bench while Beachum plays and someone else plays right tackle.

Maybe I misread it. Maybe you're right and they'll both play. We'll see.

I do know that the last time I talked to Beachum, he said he was "way ahead of schedule" on his rehab, which will come as absolutely no surprise to anyone who knows him.
