Red Defeats Blue In SMU Spring Game
Aphonso Thomas, Joseph Paden Went Over Century Mark On The Ground

DALLAS (SMU) -- Freshman Aphonso Thomas and senior Joseph Paden both broke the century mark on the ground as the offense defeated the defense, 45-35, in the SMU Football Spring Game on Saturday. The game featured a modified scoring system.
Thomas led all rushers with 122 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns and Paden rushed for 110 yards and a score on 14 carries.
Freshman quarterback Ben Hicks threw for 240 yards, highlighted by a 70-yard touchdown pass to senior Jeremiah Gaines.
Gaines led all receivers with 109 yards on four catches on the afternoon. Freshman Alex Honey hauled in three catches for 55 yards and a touchdown. Honey made a terrific catch in the back corner of the endzone, barely getting a foot down before he fell out of bounds.
Defensive backs Jesse Montgomery and Brent Freeman led the defense, each recording seven tackles, while Montgomery registered an interception and Freeman recorded a sack. Sophomore Mitchell Kaufman had five tackles and a sack. The defense logged six sacks and two interceptions.
The 2016 schedule features six home contests, including American Athletic Conference foes Houston, Memphis, USF and Navy.
