Scrimmage notes

I'll echo much of what JasonB said about the scrimmage, which is to say that the Mustangs showed virtually nothing in a well-scripted "scrimmage" that included just about as much contact as there is at a golf team practice. Very hard to glean too much from what we saw today, as the scrimmage was as much about getting everyone lined up correctly and getting players on and off the field as it was about running plays. Most of the plays were run on a two-hand-touch basis, and some were blown dead without any contact of any kind.

The actual depth chart should have a somewhat different look next weekend in Denton, as more than a dozen players were held out. Most, head coach Chad Morris said, were precautionary. The only player whose injury he said was long-term was tackle Chad Pursley, who is out for the year. Pursley will be replaced in the starting lineup by Nick Natour.

Why even waste time with this post of empty words?

That sucks about Pursley. Hope he's back 100% in the spring.

I almost went to the scrimmage. Went bass fishing instead. Reading his post made me realize I made the right decision.

You did. Flag football game between the SAE's and ATO's or Fiji-Beta during the Ken Pye era was more physical.

It was a great event for families as kids got to meet the players and everything, but it was definitely very light on the actual football.

Were you guys really expecting a full scrimmage a week before the opener? This is the way it has been done for twenty years plus.

...which is why I wasn't in the vicinity-standard procedure

I thought it was totally fine. No reason to expect more. Great event for the family.

Glad you guys are saying all of that. I was concerned that some might have been expecting more and left disappointed (several people left after the first two series).

Spring game deserves some contact, not the last week before the first game.
