How much does a win over Baylor help us?

Some people say Houston's win over OU has sealed the deal for them to the BigXII.
Baylor continues to fall apart as a team and while they won convincingly last week it was over a less than average FCS team.
What if we pull the upset?
T Boone has publicaly stated he wants SMU and we've at least made the first 'cut' for selection. The biggest knock against us is our football team and there's hope there.
Does a win at Baylor help give us another look and get rid of some of the doubt? Does it pull us closer to Houston and cause people to circle that game as a 'playoff' game for conference inclusion?

The biggest knock against SMU is attendance. Beating Baylor does nothing to alleviate those concerns. On the bright side, beating Baylor helps propel recruiting which helps improve our team which eventually boosts attendance. However, in general sports fans are not the smartest demographic. It usually takes at least a year for fans to respond to winning. In the case of SMU, it will take several years of program defining wins to improve attendance substantially.

This is our Superbowl. Lose and we should shut the program down. no pressure!

Besides just winning, the UH/OU game had very high attendance with the majority being UH fans. Plus it pulled monster TV ratings in Houston (50% higher than any regular season game last year and 78% higher than last year's highest Big 12 game. Also higher than UT/ND) It also pulled great ratings in DFW. That directly challenges the notion that UH doesn't bring any new television viewers to the conference especially in the Houston market that the Big 12 supposedly already owned.

I think we all believe UH is a lock (if the B12 decides to actually expand). That 2nd team is likely either Cincy or BYU.

Now if B12 decides to expand by 4, that is where we might have a shot. UH/SMU/BYU/Cincy

Much to the chagrin of UConn and the FL schools, geography does play a part here...as do other factors such as on-field football success, academics, TV market, attendance, resources, relationships, history, facilities, etc.

I know most casual fans poo poo this idea, but I truly believe that if B12 expands by 4, one of Tulane/SMU will be invited for the reasons stated above.

Agree - the problem is 4 is a pipe dream. 0 is much, much more likely than 4. Heck, 0 might be more likely than 2.

agree. but there seems to be an awful lot of media pressure to expand with UH after their win over OU. how that plays out, we will see.

so much of this crap is perception...B12 didn't want to 'dilute' their brand. now that UH is perceived as worthy, the tide may have turned.

lol biggest knock is the lack of support for the football team. SMU is a tiny school located in Dallas, that not even Dallasites care about.

the sky turning pink is more probable than either SMU beating Baylor or SMU being invited to B12.

The sky does turn pink. Have you never witnessed a beautiful sunrise/sunset?

Eh.
The argument goes a winning team draws fans, a losing team doesn't. In fact, if anything it's Houston that historically falls short in that department. They consistently failed to support a winner considering what they've had as a large school playing in the Astrodome and on-campus, and one game doesn't refute that.
If we beat Baylor we could push for a sell-out - at least in terms of tickets SOLD- for Liberty, and expect there to be a true sell-out for a 3-0 SMU vs. a top 25 TCU. VERY similar arguments to be made there.

A win against Baylor or TCU gives HCCM a signature win and the program some immediate needed buzz in DFW.

Does it help our case for the BigXII? It doesn't punch a ticket but it certainly changes the perception of football being a wasteland.

A big win would turn the momentum and begin to fulfill HCCM's vision of quality football on the Hilltop.
