Chad to Baylor...how realistic?

Postby East Coast Mustang » Tue Sep 13, 2016 8:50 pm

Was chatting with a BU alum at lunch today, who is pretty plugged into their athletic program and thinks Chad is the frontrunner for the Baylor job come December. He said they have no shot at someone like Tom Herman and he thinks Montgomery at Tulsa is too tied to the old regime to be considered. Basically said Chad was the perfect fit for them from both an Xs and Os and culture fit standpoint, but he wasn't sure if he'd take the job because of the challenges involved.

Part of me thinks no one of Chad's caliber would want to touch Baylor right now because of the recent scandals, not to mention they lost a big chunk of their 2016 recruiting class and have almost no one committed for 2017. Whoever takes over that job for next season is going to be taking on a daunting rebuilding effort while Texas and OU continue to stockpile elite talent, TCU isn't going anywhere, and Tom Herman and UH may be coming into the fold in the Big 12. Furthermore, there will be no margin for error with respect to off the field issues for the next coach, and the fan base is still smitten by Art Briles and the success he had, which will be very hard to replicate in the near future if Texas is back in national contention.

On the other hand, if Chad is sick of SMU dragging its feet on facility upgrades and mediocre attendance, might he bolt after this season and take his chances in the Big 12 at Baylor? I think he's waiting on a bigger job where he can still leverage his Texas ties like A&M, Arkansas, or even Oklahoma State to open up (could be sooner than you think in Stillwater), but Baylor could offer new facilities, P5 affiliation, and a potential raise.

According to Phil Bennet, Chad is safe at SMU.

He should probably worry about his own job before commenting on others... From what I hear it's doubtful that he'll be employed by BU next season.

That'll be the ninth time he's been fired. I wonder if he'll follow Briles to his next stop.

That's the key sentence there. Whomever takes the Baylor gig is going to be following arguably the most successful coach in history, and yet he will have to build from scratch. The two-deep along the skill positions on offense will lose major contributors from graduation and defections, and the some of the best players on defense will be gone while two full recruiting classes have been gutted. And this is Baylor mind you - the traditional whipping boy of the Big XII. So if Baylor throws money at him and he decides to take on THAT challenge, then good luck and god-bless.

One other thing needs to be said about Morris - he hasn't proven anything yet. Everybody expects great things from him, and I do as well, but he's still 3-11 with two wins against UNT, one against Tulane, and a loss to an FCS team. If we go out and lose to Liberty - beating them isn't a foregone conclusion, BTW - then people may start to back off. We have to win in order for him to become a hot commodity and that still has yet to happen.

FWIW, I know people extremely plugged in at Baylor. And the word from them about pretty much everything is silence. They are so freaked out about all the stuff going on that absolutely nothing is allowed to leak outside of the higher-ups of the school. So, I really think speculation about Chad is just that - speculation. It isn't coming out of a leak from those in the know, and it isn't being dropped to the press to gauge interest.

I think Baylor has bigger problems than hiring a darn football coach and they'll get to it when they get to it.
