Culturally in our country it is now accepted to an exceptional degree to lie, subvert the truth, and commit crimes...and answer any inquiry with "I didn't know" or "What does it matter now". Back in the 1970s-80s when SMU was going through its own misery, there was a culture that was far less tolerant of these shenanigans.
The interesting thing is that one can look past athletics and see it in culture at large. The rule of law seems to be diminishing in stature right before our eyes. No "doom-speak" here, just an observation from the bleachers.
Penn State already has a library with Paterno's name on it...the famous stature and shrine at the stadium has been removed. What will be interesting to me is not if PSU will "rehabilitate" Paterno's legacy, but when.
We just had our scandal a little too early in the cultural timeline...SMU, leading from the front.
