At SMU, if Sewell pays for it to be a Sewell First Down, that's what it is.

My 8 year old is finally really into the game, and asked what our traditional saying at SMU is when there is a first down (having heard the crowd yell it at other stadiums -- "It's another Red Raider ..... FIRST DOWN." "Kansas City Chieeeefs ... FIRST DOWN."). Ole Miss has one that her father and I still quote.

Not only can we not seem to create a quick crowd participation saying for first downs, we actively work against it by selling it to Sewell. People around me were asking why the announcer kept saying "Sooner First Down."

Oh SMU. Sigh.

Bring more friends to the stadium til we get to 32k per game so we don't have to have Sewell paying for the first downs and attendance pays for it.

i think after Sewell looked at last year's performance, they figured first downs would be a pretty cheap sponsorship.

Sewell is a great supporter of SMU. Sewell has given lots over the years, and I appreciate it, but unless Sewell really really upped the ad buy this year and specifically demanded the first down being named after it in order to do so, then there could be other ways to recognize Sewell without the announcer saying "That's another Sewell first down!" whenever the MUSTANGS make a 1st down.

I spent the entire first half trying to figure out what was being said. Some nice SMU folks behind me suggested the PA was saying "Smoo" First Down but I didn't buy it. I then assumed SOOL First Down was some type of anachronism that an outsider like me just didn't get. Then in the second half I saw the Sewell logo come up on the Jumbotron and it finally made sense. It literally was a distraction for our section for an entire half. When we figured it out it was deflating for all of us.

Terrible sponsorship payoff for Sewell and a distraction for gameday experience. What a horrible idea from the word go.

Why don't we have a mustang snort ala Tiger, Cougar, Lion (insert your favorite large cat here) roar - then Sewell could replace that with a Lexus rev (Vroooom, Vroooom).

Shout out to Sewell for being so supportive of SMU athletics ever since I can remember. I'd get my next car at Sewell if they werent marked up so damn high

If you dont like it, quit biitching, cut a check and call first downs whatever you want them to be called.

"Footballdad First Down" has a nice ring to it.
