I miss Mrydel's silver lining threads

Postby Charleston Pony » Sun Nov 06, 2016 7:35 am

With our 4th beat down of the year (and more likely to come this season), I don't think Chad Morris is going anywhere anytime soon. I'm still hopeful he will stick around long enough to finish the job he was hired to do!

Every time I get disenchanted I just look down at the red shirts on the sideline and look at the list of recruits coming in. Then I reread the won/lost records of Ron Meyer after he came. This team is young and growing. What happened yesterday was something that happens to young kids and no depth. Not an excuse (see Houston) but a fact.

We will be much better next year. Especially on the OL just because of depth alone. We barely had 5 guys to play OL yesterday.

That is about as much of a silver lining I can give other than we do not have to worry about finding space for a division championship trophy anymore.

when I get down, I look back at Ron Meyer's days and remember that even with the "help" he had from alumni in recruiting, Meyer's Mustangs went 4-7 in year 2 and lost their last 2 games 45-7 to Texas Tech in front of 21k fans and 47-7 at Arkansas to finish the season. The next year we went 4-6-1 with no real blowout losses (did lose 22-3 to Texas that year). That was the "road show" year that we went 1-1-1 during a 3 week road trip to Florida, Penn St & Ohio State.

Just as Charlie Strong is predicting that whoever coaches Texas next year will enjoy a 10 win season, I do think next year's Mustangs return to a bowl game.

As a personal silver lining, it was a glorious day for football, food on the Blvd was great, Blvd crowd was very good, and I had some quality extended visiting with one of my favorite people and former teammates before and during the game.

Trailing 14-0 and facing first-and-10 on their own nine-yard line, Ben Hicks completed five of six passes and capped the 91-yard drive with a nice 16-yard touchdown pass to Ke'Mon Freeman. Unfortunately, they were required to kick off afterwards.

We actually had more yards total offense trailing 31-7.

Turnovers and ST failings can do that.

Don't forget: our only healthy RB's are a 3rd string true freshman and a 6th string convert from WR. Although West plays, he is clearly not healthy enough to carry the load.

The biggest silver lining for the long term is a lesson learned.

Winning has to be learned. This young team hasn't learned how to win and this was a huge lesson in the right direction. This team will be more focused and more importantly, know that there is no such thing as an automatic good game.

Let us not ignore that Memphis was well coached, well prepared and ready to play. We were not even in the same stadium when it came to ready to play. A huge Houston win and a clutch come from behind win on the road lulled this team into complacency. Memphis reminded this young team every game is tough.

Sometimes, on the journey to success, one has to have one's arse handed to one to remind one that success is an all out effort, with attention to detail and being prepared, all the time.

Lesson learned!

Getting 4 wins (already) with Hicks starting at QB is not all bad. You all are right about special teams. No excuse to not compete in this area where you can overcome talent with hard work and using your brain.

It's just so demoralizing to get drilled like that at home. I met a young smu alum who was excited to be going to her first game after graduating a couple years ago. I'm scared to ask if she had a good time. You just can't sustain any positive momentum.
