and guess what?, you eventually will go on probation with them at the helm, have to replace them and then deal with all the fall out. A classic NCAA tale. Bliss, Patrino, Freeze, Briles, LB, Pitino, Cal, Tyndall...is it worth it?

Hey Newbie - Did you mean for this to be in the Basketball thread?

BTW - a lot of National titles and Final Fours in that list. I bet the schools made a lot of $$ off of that. Especially the ones like Lou that upgraded to a P5 conference.

yeah - I think the answer to that question is usually yes - it is worth it for those that would have had no relevancy without hiring the "gun"

Take a look at SMU for example...we had two of your list that coached here. Both were "transformational" coaches that brought significant change and upgrades while they were at the Hilltop.

I got to know Dave Bliss while he was at SMU, and later through some ministry clinics involving basketball at Park Cities Baptist Church...he seemed fine during my limited encounters, but was the type of guy that you meet, and he is looking over your shoulder to the next person.

Maybe he was just looking at New Mexico at that time...

I guess you forgot Larry Brown. But I am still glad we hired him.

gostangs beat me to it.

My own belief is that he helped program. Part of me wishes he were on the Hilltop still, although there is some doubt that HCIW Jank would have continued and I also hope that he stays for a long time.

At the end of the day though, the guys who fund the program decided when the contract talks with LB failed although some have said that Coach Brown regretted taking his agents advice.
