SMU Returns to Two-a-Days
First Day in Pads is Tuesday
DALLAS, TEXAS -- The SMU football team resumed two-a-day practices on Monday with a pair of two-hour workouts in shells at the SMU Practice Fields. The Mustangs spent time working on special teams play as well as fundamentals. SMU closed both sessions with 10 minutes of 11-on-11 drills.
Freshman wide receiver Jay Taylor stood out during the morning workout. He
made several nice catches during drills and caught a 65-yard touchdown pass
from David Page during the 11-on-11 segment. On the next play, Kelan Luker
hit John Hampton with another 65-yard TD pass.
"Jay Taylor has been very, very impressive during camp," said SMU head coach
Mike Cavan. "He made a couple of great plays today. He is very aggressive
and will just go up and get the football."
In the afternoon session, defense dominated the 11-on-11 play. The defensive
linemen swarmed the Ponies' various quarterbacks, forcing end-of-play
whistles, while the defensive backfield clamped down on the Mustangs'
wideouts.
SMU will put on full pads for the first time on Tuesday with practices at
9:30 a.m. and 3:40 p.m.
The SMU athletic department will hold an open house of Gerald J. Ford
Stadium this Saturday from 3-7 p.m. in conjunction with the Mustangs' first
scrimmage of the fall. Season and single game tickets will be on sale during
the open house and the scrimmage will begin at 7:00 p.m.
