Posted in another thread (sorry for duplicate responses): This sounds like a good move. It would improve our weakest area. We could move Jeff Traylor to OC and Todd can bring in someone for DC. Hopefully he's a great recruiter or we could find a great recruiter.

Though, it sounds like he's loyal to Herman so we might be stuck. I just don't get why we would even consider a UNT or UTSA coach. I just don't.

Well, if we are deliberately choosing to go by what has NOT worked in the recent past, hiring another Big XII Defensive Coordinator would be the right hire. We go from a fun, exciting offense and great offensive HC coach (which is working) to possibly hiring a defense-oriented HC (whose defense is not even in the top 40)?

I think it would be stipulated that Orlando could not bring his defense with him - would have to use SMU players. Jeff Traylor as OC. Continuity, you see. We don't want any continuity on defense.

Exactly. We need a fix on defense. If we keep Traylor like the players want, we can keep the offense still firing, while putting a good probability that the defense would get fixed.

We don't even have a back-up QB.

Only question is recruiting capability but with a year as UT's DC, that's probably improved.
I believe he wants to be a HC and was willing to stay at UH to do so.

Plus our QB recruit is 100% committed to SMU so I think we are safe.

this would be a great hire. it would help the defense immediately and for once we would actually recruit good defensive players!! I do believe we need to keep Justin Stepp though, developed Courtland Sutton who might be a first round pick. Trey Quinn who has the potential to go to the NFL. And James proche who is a dangerous playmaker and could start on most P5 teams. Maybe they could put Jeff trailer and Justin stepp as co-offensive coordinators. and finally get rid of Malone.
