Sounds like the person who hired him left, he had academic restrictions pushed down on him that weren't in place when he got the job, and he didn't have a good budget for hiring assistant coaches.

It also, more importantly, sounds like he knew things didn't go as well as he wanted, and went to spend time with a coach who did things differently in order to learn some new stuff.

Sound healthy, and a lot better than the "I want to prove that I can recruit by videotape" mindset that former coaches had. Looking forward to it. And super excited that he allows for open practices. Heard that at the recruiting event and confirmation on that board :). Will be fun do head down there during the spring and fall!

Very strange fit from the beginning, Sonny Dykes, the son of Spike Dykes, trying to fit in.....in the liberal Mecca of Berkeley.

Cal fans really liked how SD cleaned up the academic performance of the team. Tedford let academics slip his last couple of years and success in that area is very important to the Cal administration and alums. Where they didn't like him was his constant flirting with other jobs (Baylor, Missouri, South Carolina & UH) along with an inability to build a credible defense. Add in the fact he had virtually no success vs. their historical rivals (never beat Stanford or USC, only one win each vs. Oregon, UCLA & UW).

At SMU, I don't think flirting with other jobs will be an issue for awhile and it seems he has a new emphasis on defense. As for success against historical rivals, beating TCU more than once would be an improvement over recent coaches.

Coach Dykes goes from Lubbock and the Pirate to LaTech, then goes to Cal. Must of been a real culture shock. Heard this story from his first or second year.

Upon moving into his new neighborhood, a neighbor comes over, not to welcome him, but to reprimand him for his wife's gas guzzling SUV.

Where upon he sells his car and buys a second one...

whether true or not it defines culture shock.

Don't know whether the story is true or not, but coaches get allowances/vehicles from local dealerships so switching vehicles wouldn't cost anything.

Pretty much the epitome of "let me tell you how to live your life" attitude

The cost of the vehicle is not the point of the story. It's that he saw a gas guzzler pissed off a resident there, so he got a 2nd big truck to prove a point.

Thanks for clarifying the point of the story. That definitely did not come across to me in the original telling
