just last week--so if you redshirted as a freshman and then missed 1 season of eligibility due to injury or if you miss more than 1 year during your 5 year window of eligibility you could now get a 6th year. This could have broad applicability. Trying to figure who might be affected by this new interpretation. I think Ben Emelogu might have been eligible if he had sat when injured last year but he played through injury in all games.

a) The student-athlete did not use a season of intercollegiate competition in his or her initial year of full-time, collegiate enrollment due to an institutional decision to redshirt the student-athlete; the student-athlete was listed on the institution's squad list and was eligible for competition during the segment of the season that concludes with the NCAA championship; and the student-athlete was deprived of the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate competition in one other season due to circumstances beyond the control of the student-athlete or institution; or
b) The student-athlete is deprived of the opportunity to participate for more than one season in his or her sport within the five-year period of eligibility for reasons that are beyond the control of the student-athlete or the institution.

Chad Pursley could theoretically be eligible for a 6th year if he wanted to come back in 2019-redshirted and missed an entire season too

the re-revised David Israel/Ramon Flannigan rule. Subject to pending redshirt and injury restrictions and convolutions.

Wow. Wonder if a kid like Pursley would see the value of an additional year? Might be tough considering the need for a simple change of scenery after that length of time...

the value of that 6th year is that if you are good enough to play at this level but have no shot at a professional football career, you have a good opportunity to earn a graduate degree which might motivate a lot of guys to keep playing...although they are going to be in that situation because of injury and have to weigh the long term effect on their health.

Would Matt Davis have benefited had this rule been in place?
