Xavier Jones Named To Maxwell Award Watch List
DALLAS (SMU) — Junior running back Xavier Jones was named to the 2018 Maxwell Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday. Each year the Maxwell Football Club presents the Maxwell Award for the College Player of the Year.
Jones played in 13 games last season, making 12 starts, and led the Mustangs with 1,075 yards on 182 carries and was second on the team with nine rushing touchdowns. He posted a career game against Memphis on Nov. 18 with 175 rushing yards. Jones also registered 84 yards on 14 receptions.
Prior to the 2016 season, Jones was named a preseason Doak Walker Award candidate, but received a medical redshirt. As a true freshman in 2015, he played in all 12 games setting the SMU freshman record for most rushing touchdowns in a season with 10.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Oct. 29, with the list of finalists released Nov. 19. The winner of the Maxwell Award will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show Dec. 6. The award is voted on by NCAA Head College Football Coaches, members of the Maxwell Football Club & sportswriters and sportscasters from across the country.
