For those of you who have observed practices, best guesses on the 2 deep - thanks

Those of us who observed practice have been explicitly forbidden to provide that information...

That said, the official two deep was supposed to be released this weekend. I'm sure it will pop up on the SMU website on Monday.

Not a problem. Someone on one of the other sites has tried to skirt the rules by posting his "thoughts" on the two deep. Things like that kill access to the coaching staff and practice. I'm sure there is a reason SMU is holding back on releasing the official two deep.

All the secrecy is  . Is it really going to make some big difference to UNT? Are they just waiting intently every day for SMU's 2 deep to alter their plans?

The QB is set is stone, which is the only position that really matters to the opposition. The RB's are well known. WR's unknown to the world. The entire D might me different with all the new guys, but who knows.

Way overblown.

I tend to agree with you, but I also do what the coaching staff says to do because I like to watch practice occasionally :).

Projected depth charts inherently signal a teams gameplan or strategy.

Keeping this information close to the chest allows for an element of surprise. And I guarantee UNT cares about all of the projected starters during film study and gameplanning on their end.

Game week especially is all about time management and preparation--if you can make your opponent spin their wheels and waste their time practicing for all the uncertainties that means there is less time for them to practice against what you will actually do.

i've been to the open practices too. you think they're going to cut off people using an online forum that post a predicted depth chart?

funny thing is, the info they don't want out is injuries, and there's a glaring one predicted as a starter (on the "other site" - just say 247 since everyone knows rivals doesn't do anything) who i witnessed sitting out of practice a couple weeks ago. so, i doubt they'll care.

I've seen previous coaches get more and more sensitive to randoms showing up, so I think it does sometimes have an impact... but that is really up to the individual to do what they want to do.

But from a 247 perspective, every media member who attended was given strict guidance that we weren't allowed to discuss the 2 deep, formations, or injuries. The players who sat out a couple of weeks ago weren't necessarily injured... but we were told not to talk about who did and didn't play.

Normally, PonyPride mentions all the players in green and yellow and who didn't practice, and I always go into detail about the first and second team. But both of us chose to follow the rules out of respect for the new coaching staff...

Does anyone not think that Sonny fully understands how important this UNT game is if this SMU team is going to have a successful season (meaning going to another bowl game)?

Just released:

https://smumustangs.com/documents/2018/ ... f?id=15867

My thoughts:

Most interesting to see Wilds at LT backing up Pursley. He has made huge strides, but it really says the level of confidence they have in Hughes at RT and how impressive the frosh Thomas has been.

They are just playing games with all of the "ors" on defense, but I think it is at least an indication of the depth of the team...

since I once interned in SIDs office, I wouldn't be surprised is this isn't something cooked up by the SID that needs to get his weekly press release out--its probably as accurate as all the weights on the roster 90% of which end in 0 or 5 which needed to be released as well. What comes out of SID's office is not the same as what comes out of Coaches office-I can assure you Coaches know the exact weights of their players on daily basis

so you're 'in the media'?

i'm not and i could have put together the 2 deep for this team. it's not like it's hard to do.

The coaches don’t want leaks on injuries or position changes. I doubt they care much about a chat site speculating on 2 deep.

Well I made the mistake of telling them I was going to help write something up about practice, so I got placed in that category ;).
