Navy game thoughts

Postby JasonB » Sat Sep 22, 2018 8:49 pm

- Coaching staff deserved an F for the UNT game... they get an A+++ for this one. Defense came up with big plays, had the guts to start the true frosh, guts to put Hicks in for the OT, guts not only to go for 2, but that freaking call. Hell of a job, coaching staff.
- SImplification helped Brown, but it also helped HIcks. Those decisions were quicker than the first 3 games, much easier, and much more accuracy with the WR routes. 2 pt throw was nice, the TD pass was incredible.
- Hell of a play by Bell to take that pick away and keep a drive alive.
- Navy hurt themselves a lot out there. Great job by the D, and especially great on not allowing the QB to beat us. Navy made a ton of uncharacteristic mistakes that we were good enough to take advantage of.
- Really big win, almost a must win with the upcoming schedule in order to have a chance at a bowl.
- Fighting through the injuries in this game was really impressive. Moore was great to start, then gets hurt. Williams missed tackles and reads at time, but made a ton of plays. Great job by him and the coaches in prepping the whole team. Who would have thought we could stop them without Moore? Onu is our best tackling safety and doesn't play. Stearns has no size, but played a ton at safety. KJ is 150 soaking wet and closes the game at corner against this team. Offensively, no Jones and no Freeman. West looked gassed every minute past the second quarter but somehow made it through the game. The depth came up huge in this game, and again, great credit to the coaches for coming into this game with a great game plan and the team for executing it. With all of those injuries at critical positions, we had no business winning that game. Great job.
- Brown really wasn't a threat to keep the ball off the edge on the zone read. Surprising. The DE was crashing inside and still didn't keep and go around. The other adjustment I would like to see is playaction - the MLB was crashing up the middle playing the handoff to West. If you keep that ball on an RPO and throw to Proche or Roberson on a quick slant, there is gonna be tons of space across the middle.

Agree on most points, although I'll only give coaching staff A++...didn't like the calls to West up the gut so many times on obvious runs plays...very little chance of success...need to get more creative there when bigger backs are hurt. I liked that flip play they used at Michigan after faking inside.

I'll give defensive coaching an A++. Special teams coaching a B-. Offensive coaching a B+. We had a limited bench with a young and inexperienced QB, but that didn't excuse their decision to go pretty vanilla with the West handoffs as the game wound down. Play action in the 4th quarter could have prevented the navy comeback because their entire team knew when West was going to get the ball.

I want to see how the offensive game plan and playcalling grows next week before I start heaping praise on Lashlee.

This program turned the corner today. Good times ahead...maybe great.
We should all be excited, especially considering Sonny's recruiting skills.
Nice class on the way and the future looks pretty good, plus TCU looks like they are about to suck again, like they are supposed to. We could own this area again as far as recruiting and winning.

I was disappointed in the OL on the first three games. To their credit, they were playing in a new system and against 3 very good teams. However I would give them an A+ and a "high five" :) for today. Also, the play that went for two was brilliant. I been in an offense that ran a similar offense of shifting line and wide-outs on and off the line of scrimmage. So I understand the pressure and mistakes it can cause. Done well, it is difficult for the D to read who is illegible (it was done well). The left tight end in motion to the right side and sets - making the left tackle the real tight end and he just happens to be wearing 88 (because he actually is a tight end). Ball snaps and the left side wide-out sweeps over the top and middle (Navy covered well). Delayed, ole 88 hesitates, then sneaks toward the end zone corner. Navy does send cover, but Hicks sends a perfect pass. Game over! So confusing the officials have to look at replay to make a call. Coaches get my award for best play call sense the kickoff lateral across the field back in the good ole days (I guess that was about 1980) Over all coaches get A+ from me and defense continues to be strong. A+ for everybody...I love winning!

I was on Twitter today and there were lots of recruits at the game today. I'm sure it made an impression.

I would imagine the crowd was pretty small with the weather

One scary thought... had the officials not been able to review the formation on instant replay (because it was a scoring play) they might have ruled the formation was illegal. If the officials were confused and had no recourse they would have made a call - right or wrong. At least that is the way it was before replay.

Cole Sterns started at corner back, in place of the injured Robert Hayes.

I was in Georgetown, Tx trying to listen but could not get decent reception. Heard screaming but had no idea what happened until about 10 minutes after.

It was the wildest scene I've ever personally seen on a football field-not just the play but the celebration. Ha! there are a lot of Ponyfans that went to the game but never saw the play as they headed to the exit after Tech's tying FG
