DALLAS, Texas – Now we know why Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo was so upset about some of the mental and physical mistakes he saw during last Saturday’s rout of Lehigh. Niumatalolo understood the Midshipmen could not afford to be so sloppy against an American Athletic Conference opponent and that assessment was absolutely correct.
Navy had two of its three turnovers converted into touchdowns and committed a penalty that wiped out a touchdown of its own. The Midshipmen also gave up a kickoff return for score and all those issues came back to haunt them on Saturday.
Quarterback Ben Hicks came off the bench to throw a touchdown pass and two-point conversion as SMU stunned Navy, 31-30, in overtime at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
