Kane Named Broyles Award Nominee
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (SMU) – Mustang defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Kevin Kane has been named a candidate for the 2018 Broyles Award, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced Wednesday. The award honors college football's top assistant coaches.
Kane is in his first season with the Mustangs, having joined Sonny Dykes' staff in January.
The Mustang defense ranks third among FBS teams and leads the American Athletic Conference with 11 recoveries off 20 forced fumbles, and is 12th nationally in team tackles for loss (7.8 ). SMU is also 16th, second in The American, with 18 takeaways.
Linebackers Kyran Mitchell (61) and Richard Moore (57) are in the top three in tackles for the Mustangs, while also leading the team with 4.0 sacks each. Mitchell has a team-best 11.5 tackles for loss in 2018 and Moore adds 11.0. Jake Hall ranks second nationally in fumble recoveries with three.
As a team, the Mustangs have registered 70 TFLs for 218 yards and 20 sacks for 130. Seven different Mustangs have recorded an interception this season, while 22 players have registered at least a half tackle for loss.
In last week's 45-31 win over then-No. 17 Houston, SMU held the Cougars to a season-low 31 points and 365 yards. The Mustangs also registered four sacks, one less than the five Houston had previously allowed all season.
