No disrespect to Shane's start, but it is not a win at #2 Texas followed by a home shutout of A&M. McIlhenny should win this easily even if SMU did lose one of his first four games (at Tech).
Doak wasn't a QB, really. And can we spell Shane's and Garrett's names correctly? Thx

I will take Chuck Hixson’s first 4 in 1968. 3-1 (lost to Ohio State), and if I recall he was the national champion passing that year.

I voted for Shane, although he was demoted at Texas, for what we need he is no. 1. The pro's think he maybe the better QB.
Ford got beat out by McIllheny, but Lance couldn't pass, Love Hixon, but he couldn't throw deep, at least they ran very few deep routes for him. Meredith was easily the toughest player at any position I ever saw in the pro's (never saw him at SMU) he just got the hell beat out of him by bad Cowboy teams. His best role was, I believe when as a college sophomore he reportedly went out with Jane Mansfield.
Doak? is this a trick question? A long time ago, I worked with a man that was bragging about being HP's third team QB in high school. He said it wasn't that embarrassing, so I bit. He said both went on to college, both were all-Americans, both played in the pro's and both made the Hall of Fame. He said Bobby Layne was first team and when he went out Doak moved over. Long and short he rarely got into a game.
