Referees, Dykes not alone

Postby AusTxPony » Mon Oct 14, 2019 9:45 am

In the first overtime of Baylor's 33-30 win over Texas Tech, a snap from Bears' center Jake Fruhmorgen hit his rear end and fell to the turf and was recovered by Texas Tech defensive tackle Jaylon Hutchings. The officials blew the play dead quickly and penalized Baylor with a false start for an illegal snap. Baylor scored a touchdown two plays later; Texas Tech tied the game on its overtime possession but the Bears went on to win in a second overtime.

Texas Tech coach Matt Wells stated his case to the officials in the moment the call was made and acknowledged his exasperation to reporters after the game, but Hocutt got an official acknowledgement from the conference on Sunday.

"It is important to state that we have been in constant communication with the Big 12 Conference office from the immediate end of the game and throughout Sunday regarding the illegal snap call in the first overtime," Hocutt said in a statement. "It has been confirmed that the ruling on the field of an illegal snap was incorrect.

Back in the day, Big II (Big VII) officals were some of the sorriest in the land. Not sure that is true now with AAC officials in the mix but Big XII officals are pretty close to the AAC for knowledge of the rules.

I could see blowing a judgement call (pass interferences in Endzone) but there is no excuse for not knowing the rules or what is reviewable.

This was obvious right away and a clear fumble recovery. These refs had a perfect opportunity to circle up and make the easy call. Clearly no voters watched the game (it was on a fox regional channel I think) or Baylor wouldn't have jumped in the rankings. Won't matter as neither team will make it to the conference championship game, but I would be pissed if I were a Tech fan.

Baylor shouldn't even have a football team given their recent total lack of institutional control.

Baylor has rebuilt itself from the ground up. I’m very happy for their success under Rhule.

Baylor's issues go far beyond the football program and are far from resolved. So I respectfully disagree.

I had a great conversation with the new president and her husband recently. No, they haven't been fully implemented. But you cannot do anything but go forward with a serious plan to address the deep troubles the previous regime permitted and caused. If that means you wear a scarlet letter in the eyes of the public going forward, so be it. But all you can do is the right thing and I think Baylor's doing that. It's actually a story of redemption. And I kinda like that story because my alma mater's going through the same thing right now. Why it took us so much longer, I'l never know. But it is what it is. Good time to be a Mustang. And looks like good times ahead for Baylor. I wish them more of those.

Fair point PB. I hope Baylor gets back in the right again of being a moral institution. They can't allow that to be a repeatable thing.

Personally, I hope Baylor loses every game and ends up relegated to FCS for numerous reasons.

Give me Russia State over that place any day.

You don't just implement changes and "move on" from something like what they did.

33 years later people still associate us with playing players, and I hope in 33 years people never forget what Baylor allowed to happen as well.

Absolutely no comparison between monetary recruiting incentives and an institution supporting the perpetrators of sexual assault and demonizing the victims. Talk about the NCAA really blowing a “judgement call”!
