Playing Hard Enough to Win

Three things about the game last night strike me as keys to victory.

1) Turnovers. We had one turnover that lead to 3 points for Houston. Houston had 3 turnovers that lead to 14 points for SMU. Houston had 5 total fumbles of which we recovered two. We played hard enough create opportunities to win despite not playing our best on Offense

2) Penalties. We had far too many penalties with 9, Yes 9, penalties for 86 yards. This could have been a game changer had it not been for Houston's 11 penalties for 129 yards. Often, penalties are created by better play. Seems we were able to put enough pressure on Houston players to create sometimes much needed penalties.

3) FG/PAT play. We were perfect in the point scoring kicking game. One missed FG would have been very significant.

We had a short week and that probably contributed to sluggish play and sloppy execution. However,
we played hard and that effort created opportunities for us to achieve victory. It wasn't pretty, but hard play made the difference in the game.
