UNIVERSITY PARK — Both Shane Buechele and Chris Naggar were sitting in the hallways of Gerald J. Ford Stadium on Oct. 3.
It was just a few minutes after Buechele had commandeered a last-minute drive to win the game. A few minutes after Naggar’s perfect 46-yard kick had given SMU the 30-27 victory over Memphis, the defending conference champions.
Buechele and Naggar were waiting to go into the media room. But as they waited, Naggar said the significance of the moment wasn’t lost.
A moment of reflection for the two separate, but nearly identical journeys the two took to get there.
“We were just laughing, looking at each other like, you could just tell what we were both thinking,” Naggar said.
“This has been a crazy ride.”
Both Buechele and Naggar grew up in Arlington. They faced each other in junior high. They knew of each other throughout high school.
